is taking care of students. Also, I’m very available to my staff. I was a ‘wrench,’ in the Marines, and I started here as fleet manager. When my drivers are checking out their buses in the morning, I’m out there with them. When they come in from their morning runs, I’m in the driver’s room, asking them how it went.”

Extra Credit Adds Up More school districts are allowing drivers to bring

their own children who are too young for school on their buses with them as a benefit. There are rules, such as the child being over the age of two or having to bring his/her own car seat. But several districts have been able to hire drivers or aides when childcare wasn’t a barrier to having a job with such early morning report times. Zylstra said he found that although pay and health insurance are important, there are some extra bene- fits besides taking the school bus home. One district even offered a cell phone stipend, with the expectation that drivers would call parents after their route, before bringing behavior issues to administrators. ●
