Heroes A bus driver in Jacksonville, Florida decorated her school bus

for the fifth birthday of one of her students, Anna Hopson. The pre-kindergarten student has Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, a neuromuscular disorder that leads to loss of muscle tissue and touch sensation across various parts of the body. Elsewhere, two grocery stores in Nebraska raised over $40,000 and stuffed 12 school buses full of supplies to be donated to the Nebraska Flood Relief. The flood swept through the state during the week of March 21 and caused over $1 billion in damage.

Heartbreak A student in Houston was hit by a car that drove around a school bus that was stopped with its red lights flashing and stop arm extended. The victim was transported to the hospital and has remained there at this report. A 4-year-old boy was killed in New York after exiting from the school bus and improperly walking behind the vehicle. The student was hit by the driver of a church van, who mistook the gas pedal for the brake pedal. The boy was pinned between the school bus and the van. Other states are starting their own initiatives to make school bus stops safer in their communities. Students in North Carolina created a smart school bus sign that flashes when the school bus approaches, to alert other motorists. A school district in Ohio created a school bus stop safety campaign, “When Big Yellow Stops, Everyone Stops,” to help raise awareness and improve safety.
