chool buses operate in challenging visibility conditions from darkness,
dawn, and dusk, to fog, rain, and snow. Yet, traditional school bus safety systems have relied on passive visibility measures like reflective materials, which depend on headlights or ambient light to be effective.
Today’s roads demand a more proactive approach. Rather than reacting after a motorist has already missed seeing a stopped school bus, improving visibility increases driver awareness and gives motorists more time to recognize and respond safely. According to the 2026 National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services Illegal Passing Survey, an estimated 38.4 million illegal school bus passings occur annually. This is a reduction over previous years, but the numbers
are still too high. Every illegal passing puts a child at risk.
