Most districts already are running lean... the answer isn’t more pay to compete with neighboring districts either. We need to get more people from outside of the industry to take interest, but they won’t be interested if they aren’t supported by leadership, including school leadership and enforcing student behavior expectations. The system is broken and our legislators aren’t interested in fixing it. Facebook/Jason Nelson
My district pays benefits in full, as most districts do in my state. They drive 40 or more hours per week. They also pay into a state retirement system that the district matches. It’s not the pay, it’s not the split shift, it’s the no support from leadership. Drivers can only take getting things thrown at their head so many times before they realize this isn’t for them. There are also barriers for suspension in my state. If [student riders] get a bus suspension, and then don’t come to school, that counts as a school day suspension. I find the biggest problem is not getting support with unruly, disrespectful children. I love to drive, I love my schedule and I love “good” kids. All it takes is to have one unruly child to ruin a run. Facebook/Brenda
