How we measure success

In last year’s report we introduced six core outcomes that we would use going forward to create our annual impact report to demonstrate our successes and benchmark our progress for members. The six outcomes are inclusion, inspiration, engagement, influence, connections, and sustainability. These outcomes, each different but working together to support the RYA mission, are the foundation of our ongoing strategy.

Measuring impact in everything we do isn’t always possible, but we are continuing to establish baseline evidence where possible so we can demonstrate the real-world progress and impact of our work in the years to come.

Inclusion

An environment where everyone feels welcome, safe and valued.

The water is for all

Here are some of the things we’ve done this year to promote inclusion:

• Created the RYA Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP). • Introduced our updated Affiliation renewal process. Asking all new and existing affiliates to commit to working towards revised affiliation criteria which include actions relating to safeguarding, health and safety and inclusion best practice.

• Partnered with the Active Bystander Training Company empowering members of the RYA community to challenge microaggressions, harmful comments and behaviours.

• Produced a Community Engagement Guide to showcase best practice for clubs and centres.

• Delivered eight workshops on creating inclusive environments.

• Spotlighted LGBTQIA+ stories and participated in 2023 London Pride Parade.

• Shared the voices and experiences of black boaters during Black History Month.

• Modernised training with a shiſt towards digital navigation resources.

• Continued to review the accessibility of our resources such as eLearning, already improved by expanding our eBook library to include audio books.

• Passed the Child Protection in Sport Unit (CPSU) audit, recognising the success of our outreach work with clubs and centres.

• Provided provision for British Sign Language at the AGM, Volunteer Awards and RYA Dinghy & Watersports Show.

RYA Annual Strategic Report 2024 9

In focus: Affiliation review

What we’re doing For the 2024 affiliation cycle, we’re asking all new and existing affiliates to sign up to a new RYA Affiliation Portal, a platform designed to support club management. Affiliates will be encouraged to self-assess their status against criteria related to safeguarding, health and safety, and inclusion.

Why we’re doing it

The information provided helps us to better understand to whom our Affiliates are delivering activity; what mechanisms they have in place and areas around which we should focus our support services. Recognising that no one Affiliate is the same, we will work with our clubs, classes and centres to understand how we can help them and enhance the great work they are already doing. We are very much at the beginning of this new affiliation process and will continue to support all Affiliates.
