Sustainability

Meaningful reduction in our impact on climate and biodiversity while inspiring positive action by others.

Cleaning up our water

The RYA joined forces with 12 leading organisations in support of ‘The End Sewage Pollution’ Surfers Against Sewage manifesto.

The document outlines a five-point plan for the Government to eradicate pollution from our waters:

• Enforce the law • Stop pollution for profit • Prioritise high risk pollution • Empower a nature led approach • Reveal the truth

Fuel for the future

Alongside the Inland Waterways Association and the Cruising Association, the RYA came together to form the HVO Joint Working Group to campaign for sustainably produced Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) to be allowed as an interim decarbonisation solution for recreational boats with diesel engines. In December, the Department for Transport announced that it will now allow the supply of inland waterways vessels with HVO without violating excise regulations – another great step towards greener cruising.

We have been working with our partners to trial the electrification both of high-speed RIBs and club

safety boats. This collaboration will see us work together to test, develop, and evolve electronic marine propulsion into the future.

Recovering nature

The RYA and The Green Blue are active partners in the EU LIFE ReMEDIES Seagrass Project led by Natural England. Last year saw over 4,000 seagrass plants deployed in Plymouth Sound, bringing the total area of seagrass planted in Jennycliff Bay to over three hectares.

The RYA continues to be an active member of the Non- Native Species Secretariat, highlighting the threat from invasive species to wildlife, health, and vital infrastructure. Boat owners and boating communities have been encouraged to participate in surveys to assist in data collection on invasive species.

Practising what we preach

Sustainable improvements have been made at RYA HQ, such as installing solar panels and switching to LED lighting in all our buildings. The RYA’s internal focus is on major events and travel, with the events and environment team working together to achieve the prestigious Platinum Clean Regatta status for its sustainability measures at the Formula Kite European Championships.
