Influence

A leading voice for sailing, boating and related matters nationally and internationally.

Making waves

We have campaigned on many significant issues during the year:

• Our environmental efforts through The Green Blue included developing a searchable online map for boat users to find their nearest business offering flare disposal.

• The Merchant Shipping (Watercraſt) Order 2023 came into force in the UK, bringing some previously unregulated activities within the scope of the Merchant Shipping Act 1995. The legislation aims to reduce accidents resulting in personal injury or damage to property by placing a duty on owners to ensure their watercraſt are operated safely.

• Maritime Minister Baroness Vere joined the Marine Accident Investigation Branch and the RYA during Maritime Safety Week to put on a demonstration to raise industry awareness of the challenges of person in the water recovery.

• Addressed the end of paper chart production by insisting that approved sub-ECDIS electronic chart display solutions be available before paper chart production ceases, which the UKHO has accepted by extending the target date to 2030.

• Energy bills remain up to 200 per cent higher than normal, putting thousands of facilities and clubs at risk of closure or reduced services. The RYA joined over 200 organisations and individuals from various sectors in an open letter to the UK Prime Minister, urging the Government to provide greater support for grassroots facilities and clubs amidst the ongoing energy crisis.

• Had representatives on multiple World Sailing committees, ensuring British voices are heard at an international level.

Your influence on us

RYA membership is stable and currently stands at 106,080.

As an RYA member, you have access to advice, certifications, discounts, competitions, insurance, and more. You have the chance to lend your voice to the causes that we champion in the interest of all who take to the water.

The benefits to you don’t stop there. The support you show for the RYA through your membership increases the influence we have when campaigning on maritime safety, water quality, and continuing to make water sports more open to all. In this way, your membership improves your boating experience without you having to liſt a finger.

In focus: Calor Gas What we did

The RYA, alongside the Westerly Owners’ Association, the Cruising Association, and the wider recreational boating community, pressured Calor Gas to reverse their decision to withdraw the supply of 3.9kg and 4.5kg bottles. Many recreational boaters rely on these smaller cylinders for cooking and heating.

Why we did it

Valid safety concerns were raised about the potential dangers of these smaller options becoming unavailable, including illegal refilling of cylinders or boaters being forced to place larger, ill-fitting cylinders on their boats. We’re pleased to see that Calor Gas took notice of everyone’s feedback and acted upon it.
