Sustainability

We have begun to integrate sustainability fully into our everyday working practices with the launch of our new strategy, ‘Pathways to Zero: A Vision for a Sustainable UK Recreational Boating Sector’. The strategy outlines the key sustainability objectives and actions that the RYA will seek to achieve over the coming ten years.

We are aligning policy with fellow European Boating Association members on several important areas of sustainability such as underwater noise, air quality and means of propulsion.

The Green Blue team expanded our range of free online resources, including the UK Marine Environmental Facilities Directory and Environmental Legal Register. As part of the EU LIFE ReMEDIES project we also released a new Best Practice Guide to Anchoring and Mooring.

Following consultation with RYA affi liated clubs and recognised training centres in the Dorset area we submitted our recommendations for the introduction of voluntary protective measures in Studland Bay. These include a joint management and engagement approach that would give autonomy to boat owners and retain access to this important anchorage.

On behalf of our members, we continued to raise safety concerns and outlined restrictions placed on the planned narrow navigation channel between the coast of Anglesey and the proposed site for the Morlais tidal energy structures. While we support the development of marine renewables to reduce the use of fossil fuel, we will ensure that those involved take proper account of existing uses and navigational safety for recreational boat users.
