Education And Training
In the year we marked the 50th anniversary of RYA training and qualifications, celebrations were paused as we swiftly focused our efforts on supporting our recognised training centres as they adapted to the pandemic restrictions. Many elements of the RYA Conditions of Recognition were temporarily relaxed to enable centres to continue operating. We also created and shared digital aids and guidance for running virtual courses to help centres move their activities online.
As well as lobbying Government for support for small businesses and self-employed workers, we worked closely with the MCA to ensure the extension of commercial endorsements, medical certificates and vessel code certificates.
Sadly, a small number of recognised training centres ceased trading due to the impact of COVID-19 and, more recently, Brexit. Despite these challenges, the overall number of recognised training centres has remained relatively stable across 58 countries, and we received positive feedback from the majority of centres as training activity resumed.
There has been an increase in demand for eLearning, with many more centres now offering RYA online courses. This has been reflected in our recovering sales of certificates and publications.
Engagement with instructors has been a priority throughout 2020-21, with regular opportunities for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) through webinars, videos and other online content. More than 1,200 RYA instructors, appointment holders and training centre principals joined us for the first virtual training conference at the start of 2021. The new and innovative virtual format made the event more accessible than ever before, attracting delegates from 40 countries.
We continue to make digital advancements as we work towards a paperless system and have recently launched a new process to allow coaches and trainers to submit instructor course administration online. We are also overhauling the way credentials
are dealt with in our database. The new system will be clearer and easier to use and paves the way for the new website to display people’s qualifications online in their new MyRYA profile.

Our publications portfolio increased, with new editions and more accessible eBooks. In 2020 we launched RYA Audiobooks. The RYA Yachtmaster Handbook and RYA VHF Handbook audiobooks are now available on more than 40 different channels, and work has already begun on more titles to be made available in this format.
We continue to support centres, instructors and training candidates both in the UK and abroad. We are now focused on ensuring that instructors and appointment holders whose qualifications and appointments are expiring are dealt with on an individual basis to ensure their revalidation options are as flexible and accessible as possible.
