SHORT TRIP Saugatuck, MI

SITUATED ALONG THE eastern shore of Lake Michigan, Saugatuck is roughly a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Chicago, making it an easy weekend retreat. In the ’70s, the bustling arts community became a destination for LGBTQ Midwesterners and eventually took on the unofficial title of “Provincetown of the Midwest.” Stroll down Butler Street for shopping, art

galleries and sweets at Kilwin’s Chocolates (152 Butler St; 269-857-1195, kilwins. com). Kick back and relax at the charmingly divey Sand Bar Saloon (141 Butler St; 269- 857-2676), or choose from a solid selection of Michigan brews up the street at Phil’s Bar & Grille (215 Butler St; 269-857-1555, philsbarandgrille.com). As a lakefront town, there are plenty of

ways to get sandy in Saugatuck. Visitors can spend a relaxing day lounging on a towel at the gorgeous Oval Beach (Perryman St and Oval Dr; 269-857-2603, saugatuck.com/ beaches). The more adventurous vacationer

can scale the coastline at Saugatuck Dunes State Park (6575 138th Ave, Holland, MI; 269-637-2788) and be rewarded with spectacular views of the lake and rolling Allegan County farmland. It’s largely due to that farmland that eating fresh, local produce is so easy during Saugatuck summers. Stop by Earl’s Farm Market (1630 Blue Star Hwy; 269- 227-2074, earlsfarmmarket.com) to pick your own berries or buy homemade jams and locally grown veggies. Trek inland to

nearby Fennville to Salt of the Earth (114 E Main St, Fennville, MI; 269-561-7258, saltoftheearthfennville.com) for a seasonal menu made with produce from farms within a 50-mile radius. And don’t forget to grab a six-pack of

Virtue Cider (2170 62nd St, Fennville, MI; 269-722-3232; virtuecider.com), the Goose Island Brewery–owned orchard that presses, ferments, ages and blends Michigan apples at its Allegan County farmhouse. Grace Perry

LONG TRIP San Francisco

HOME TO THE equally iconic Golden Gate Bridge and La Taqueria carnitas burrito (voted the best burrito in the nation so many times we’ve lost count), San Francisco is a paradise for foodies, hipsters and nature lovers looking to frolic in the fog this summer. Start your day with a blast from the past courtesy of the de Young Museum (50 Hagiwara Tea Garden Dr; 415-750-3600, deyoung.famsf. org). The interactive exhibition “Summer of Love Experience” celebrates the 50th anniversary of the summer of 1967 with music, light shows and lots of fringe. Continue your trip down counterculture lane with a stop at Hippie Hill in Golden Gate Park (John F. Kennedy and Kezar Drs), where, half a century later,

The de Young Museum

locals still host drum circles and pass the peace pipe. On the other side of the

city, the newly renovated and totally Instagram-worthy San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (151 3rd St; 415-357-4000, sfmoma.org) offers a brand-new photography wing, a living

outdoor wall and Michelin- starred restaurant In Situ. In need of sustenance? Babu Ji (280 Valencia St; 415-525-4857, babujisf.com) brings Indian street food, tandoori specialties and a self-serve beer fridge to the Mission District, while State Bird Provisions’ (1527 Fillmore

St; 415-795-1272, statebirdsf .com) whimsical menu has intrigued and satisfied diners for a decade—though you may have to wait several hours for a table. For grab-and-go options, the Ferry Building (One Ferry Building; 415-983-8030, ferrybuildingmarketplace.com) is a foodie temple with stalls for local cheese, chocolate, empanadas and more. When you’re ready for a nightcap, settle in at Novela (662 Mission St; 415-896-6500, novelasf .com), where you order drinks based on your favorite literary characters and enjoy them among crowded bookshelves. The next morning, fuel up with breakfast potatoes at Plow (1299 18th St; 415-821-7569, eatatplow.com) before lacing up your sneakers for a stroll through the famously foggy Mount Sutro Forest (mntsutro .com), located in the thick of the urban sprawl, for the quintessential San Francisco day.  Sarah Medina
