The Chicago Blues Festival brings 12-bar melodies to Millennium Park this summer.
FOR THE FIRST time in its 34- year history, the annual Chicago Blues Festival will be held somewhere other than Grant Park: This year, the free music fest makes its Millennium Park debut; Jay Pritzker Pavilion hosts performances by Chicago blues legend Billy Branch and Grammy Award–winning hip- hop artist Rhymefest, who performs an opening-night tribute to the influence of blues on rap. Attracting big names like
Rhymefest and Sunday’s headliner, Austin guitarist Gary Clark Jr., played into the city’s decision to move the event to its new venue. Mark
Kelly, commissioner of the city’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, said the new location will help “heighten the event’s reputation as the world’s preeminent free blues festival.” However, the fest’s boosted reputation could leave some fans on the outside looking in during headlining acts. In terms of space, Millennium Park is significantly smaller than the festival’s Grant Park site. With an average attendance of 500,000 people throughout three days, the festival could get a little crowded. And because Millennium Park reserves the right to close the Great Lawn and seating bowl if capacity is reached, you should
claim your seat well in advance of any main acts you’re dying to see. In addition to Pritzker Pavilion, three stages host local blues performers throughout the afternoon and early evening: the Budweiser Crossroads stage on the south promenade, the Mississippi Juke Joint stage on the north promenade and the Front Porch stage on the Harris Theater rooftop. So regardless of how close you get to the main stage, there are still plenty of wailing guitar solos and soulful vocals to go around.
