Canada hosted the 49th An- nual Sovereign Awards cer- emony through a live presentation on the evening of Thursday, April 18, 2024. The top three finalists

in each category are deter- mined by the online ballots of the Jockey Club of Canada’s knowledgeable voters. The media category award finalists were deter- mined by media profession- als within the industry selected from across North America.

The Jockey Club of

Canada is pleased to an- nounce the 2023 Sovereign Award winners in the order in which they were pre- sented.

Special Sovereign Award: ROBERT “RED” MCKENZIE

After more than 80

years working in horse rac- ing in Alberta, you might think that Robert ‘Red’ McKenzie has done it all. A former jockey, and then suc- cessful trainer, who has won some 1,600 races, Robert landed in the record books on the evening of June 23, 2023 when his mare Enti- tled Star won a claiming race at Century Mile. At the age of 96, he became the oldest trainer to saddle a winner in Canadian racing history when his mare cir- cled the field as the longest

bred racing statistics are hard to come by before 1976, the official number of winners for Robert as a jockey, trainer, and owner, could be much higher than 1,600. But what is known is that the Alberta resident, who was born on January 1, 1927, was still bringing horses over to race in 2023. Robert loved horses and started riding at the age of 10 at a riding academy in Edmonton. He accompanied his father and sister to the racetrack and started riding races at bush tracks such as Ponoka, Rimbey, and Red Deer. When he turned 16 and was old enough to ride the ‘A’ tracks, he would travel throughout the West- ern Canada Association which included tracks in

OEEEP Program Continues Creating Pathways to Employment in the Equine Industry

With an increasing number of want ads on horse in-

dustry job boards, there is no denying the equine industry is clamouring for suitable employees. Speaking with three facilitators of the Ontario Equine Education and Employ- ment Program (OEEEP) it becomes abundantly clear, this is a Win-Win program for those looking to embark on a career with horses, and for employers looking for enthu- siastic workers with a basic knowledge of horse care. The successful OEEEP program has provided free

training to just under 200 participants and provided wage incentives for horse industry employers all over the province. Facilitated by Equine Guelph, the Ontario Harness

Horse Association (OHHA) and VPI, Inc.; the Ontario Equine Education and Employment Program has received funding for a third year from the Ontario Government. “As Milton’s population grows four times faster than

the provincial average, our government is working with labour and industry partners to open up new training and apprenticeship opportunities for local workers and job- seekers,” said David Piccini, Minister of Labour, Immi- gration, Training and Skills Development. “That’s why our government is proud to support OHHA’s Ontario Equine Education and Employment Program with an investment of over $2.4 million through our Skills Development Fund,

which will open up more opportunities for local workers to learn about the in-demand careers in this exciting in- dustry.” Training sessions for participants will be offered

from April 22 until September 2024. Employers are en- couraged to sign up now for the opportunity to hire from the program and receive wage incentives up to 50% for up to $5,000 while their employees settle in and learn the
