Horse racing, fancy hats,

highlight D.C.’s premier spring event
THE PLAINS, Va., April 23, 2024– One of the na- tion’s oldest and largest steeplechase events, the Vir- ginia Gold Cup celebrates its ninety-ninth anniversary this year on Saturday, May 4, at Great Meadow (5089 Old Tavern Rd.) in The Plains, Va. Tickets are on sale and are expected to sell out.
Back after a long hia-
tus are the popular Jack Russell Terrier Races where Jack Russells chase a lure through a small course and to the finish. The first dog that completes the course and crosses the finish line is the winner. These dogs are professionally trained to race over the course and chase the lure. The dog rac- ing is fun to watch and chil- dren especially love seeing these little dogs flip in the air as they excitedly take on jump obstacles and race to the finish. The Jack Russell Terrier Races get underway at 11 a.m. in the paddock on Member’s Hill. (Note: out- side dogs are not welcome.) While the JRT’s are

racing, various hat contest contestants will be getting ready and tailgate entries will be in the process of set- ting up their lavish tailgates for those competitions later in the day. More than 30,000 people are expected to come out in their race-day finest to socialize and entertain. This year’s tailgate
competition is sponsored by Rappahannock Cellars lo- cated in Huntly, Virginia.
Rappahannock Cellars is also the official Virginia wine of the Virginia Gold Cup. Tailgate winners will receive some special prizes from the winery with a case of wine (value $480) going to first place, 6 bottles (value $240) going to the second place winner and the third place winner will re- ceive 3 bottles (value $120). “We are delighted to have Rappahannock Cellars as a sponsor this year,” said Thomas Eshelman, execu- tive director of the Virginia Gold Cup Association. “Their
award-winning
wines will add so much to the ambiance of the event.” The Gold Cup’s long-
standing tradition beckons to national celebrities, local VIPs, D.C. politicians as well as visitors from around the world. Characterized by lavish tailgate spreads, sleek thoroughbreds and exciting hoof-pounding competition, many companies have capi- talized on what the day has to offer by getting involved with sponsorships, purchas- ing tents to entertain, and some actually end up doing business there. Steeplechase offers a
fast-action sport in a refined social setting and, at the Gold Cup, some of the best horses and jockeys compete over hurdles and timber fences. Held every year on the first Saturday in May, the Virginia Gold Cup en- joys a spectacular setting in the heart of Virginia’s horse country with the Blue Ridge Mountains serving as the backdrop. It is Virginia’s an- swer to the Kentucky Derby. Gates open for the
