Texas Heat
By Ryan Kent In the ever great and
growing sport of cutting in Ontario, there are a few OCHA competitors each year that step up their game and go play with the big kids on the big playground. You see, cutters never really grow up; they just find big- ger sandboxes to play in. The NCHA National
Circuit Championship hosts cutting competitors from every circuit affiliated with the National Cutting Horse Association. It boasts 16 cir- cuits across the US, Canada and Europe. That means the top competitors in each cir- cuit receive an invitation to this international event held in the Will Rogers Memorial Complex located in Fort
compete. Ashley Chmara is a
frequent topic this year, aboard her Texas bred mare, Maggies Kit Kat or Mags as she refers to her. In the $35,000 Non-Pro class, Ashley scored a 209 under the strict judging you can imagine an event like this has. She then advanced to the finals, scoring a 208 and finished 4th overall. You can imagine the level of horses and riders this Ontario na- tive had to compete against. Congratulations Ashley. Nicole Crispen hauled

tough competition that are not out of place at such an event.
The OCHA had 4 members travel to Texas to
down one of my favorite horses to watch, Catch A Cat. This bay gelding has some buckles and a saddle series win at home in 2022 and has really given the Crispen family something to

(owned by VanBoekel Hog Farms) in the $2000 Limited Rider class. Shelley is a very hard worker in the sport and really puts the hours in. I once walked into the barn on a show day at 5:30 am, feeling all proud I was the first competitor in the barn tending to my horse and I was met with Shelley, who had already fed the horses she was tend- ing to. Shelley works hard preparing her horses and also helps fellow cutters pre- pare their horses on show day. Shelley scored a 210 in the first go making it known she was there to compete. Eric VanBoekel
rode 3 horses at the event, showing well on all 3. Eric scored a 210 in the $5000 Novice Horse Non- Pro riding Boonos Dias. A gelding that proves he can run with the best. Eric also scored a 210 rid- ing Hy On The Hog in
the $25,000
Novice Horse Non- Pro. Spot the Hottie, his go-to mare, scored a 212 in the Non-Pro. This mare also won the Bri- dleless Cutting competition at the

weekend in Ancaster. Eric is one of the driving forces in the OCHA and continues to evolve new competitors. Congratulations to the above OCHA
members, for stepping it up and represent- ing Ontario as a force to be reckoned with, at an international event. Never second guess the talent and horsepower here in On- tario.
