Beth Underhill Joins Rome Gladiators for Global Champions League
Paris, France – The Rome Gladiators have added Canadian Olympian Beth Underhill to its team for the second half of the 2022 Global Champions League season. The mid-season transfer sees Un-
derhill join Shane Breen of Ireland; Under 25 rider Zoe Conter of Belgium; French rider Edward Levy; Under 25 rider Nina Mallevaey of France; and Fernando Martinez Sommer of Mexico in representing the Rome Gladiators, powered by
ClipMyHorse.TV. Underhill replaces Pieter Clemens of Belgium. Organized alongside the Longines
Global Champions Tour, the Global Champions League team competition is comprised of 16 events around the world including the team’s home stop in Rome, Italy, from September 1 to 4, 2022. The Rome Gladiators were on the podium with third place finishes in Miami, United States, and Stockholm, Sweden. Rome Gladiator team member Mallevaey won the second round of Global Champions League competition in Miami while Martinez Sommer did the same in Cannes. Following the first eight events of
the season, the Rome Gladiators cur- rently sit eighth in the overall rankings among 16 teams. Individually, Martinez Sommer is ranked seventh overall in the championship standings. “We’re incredibly excited to have
Beth joining the team,” said Tara Dow- Rein on behalf of the Rome Gladiators
team owner, Rein Family LLC. “It was our intention to have our best horses on the team. We’ve recently invested in more horsepower for Nina and now Beth will also compete with our horses. “We’ve been so pleased with the
performances of our team members to date and are now looking forward to see- ing what they can do in the second-half of the season with the addition of Beth,” continued Dow-Rein. “I am honoured to be part of the
Global Champions League at the invita- tion of Tara and Mark Rein,” said Un- derhill, a veteran of Olympic, World Championship, and Pan American Games competition. “It’s a fantastic team that has some great riders and has been getting strong results. I’m really excited for this new venture.” Underhill becomes only the second
Canadian, and the first Canadian female athlete, to compete in the Global Cham- pions League after Eric Lamaze, who rode for various teams over several sea- sons before announcing his retirement from the sport earlier this year. In addi- tion to operating her own training busi- ness, Beth Underhill Stables, Underhill also rides for Lamaze’s Torrey Pines Stable. To follow all the action live or on

Silver Lyning Scoops $63,360 Ontario Bred Futurity for Michelle Woodley
AJAX DOWNS, WEDNESDAY, JULY 6, 2022 - Trainer Michelle Woodley held a hot hand in the final of the $63,360 Ontario Bred Futurity at Ajax Downs on July 6 and while the Alton, Ontario horsewoman came away with the winner of the important 2-year-old stakes race, it was not with the horse that most thought. Woodley’s own filly SILVER LYNING, rid-
den by Tony ‘TP’ Phillips, scored a mild upset at 2 to 1 in the 300-yard race for Ontario-bred juve- niles, holding on for a half-length victory over 23 to 1 shot Eyes Dasha Wacky, owned by Marie Broadstock and trained by Don Reid. It was an- other neck back to 15 to 1 shot Quick Asa Hicc- cup, trained by Woodley for Richard Wincikaby. Heavily favoured FIRSTPRIZE CHARLOTTE, also trained by Woodley for Wincikaby, finished fifth after becoming restless in the starting gate pre-race. Maximize was a late scratch at the gate. The time of the race was a smart 15.624 for
an 88 speed index. It was the second career start for Silver Lyning, who had a good closing kick to be second in the first Trial for the Ontario Bred Futurity on June 15. Silver Lyning is the first horse Woodley has
bred, sharing the breeding plans with her friend Gary McNichol, and the grey filly is the first foal to race from the Ajax Downs, stakes-winning mare Embrace Extravagence, also co-owned and

trained by Woodley. “She’s a really sweet filly, very laid back
for a 2-year-old,” said jockey Tony Phillips. “She ran a good second in her Trial but I could feel like I had more so I was confident she could give them a run for the money.” Woodley, who, along with her partner John
McInerney, is well known for her success with young horses, said the win was bittersweet. “Firstprize Charlotte got a little fractious in
the gate and because of that I think she blew her break a bit,” said Woodley. “But Silver Lyning, she did everything right so we are super happy.” Racing continues at Ajax Downs on
Wednesday. July 13, 2022, followed by a special Sunday day of racing on July 17, ‘Craft Brewery Day’ with on-track prizes for fans in attendance. Follow us on social media @AjaxDowns
