we needed a larger-than-life ambassador to embody ‘A Century of Champions’. From Our Founder
Remembering June 1988
Let’s congratulate us. We are
now into our 53 year. Barry and all his enthusiastic writers and advertisers have done a fabulous job of keeping the horse industry well informed. Lets hope for another 53
years. Back in June 1988 summer
arrived early for the Horse show season as Ontario Premier David Peterson opened the $2.5 million Equine Research Centre in Guelph. Following the opening ceremonies Peterson toured the facility.
Equi-Fest welcomed horse
lovers and competitors to Kil- bryne Farms to take part in the Combined Trade Show and Inter-
national Dressage event. The Alberta Quarter Horse
Association reported that their Breeders Sale gained the highest average price in five years.
Zer-O-Lock Enterprises of
BC sponsored five talented Cana- dian teenaged equestrians who participated in the AQHA Youth World Championships in Fort Worth, Texas. They were Randy Vanee, Niki Amlin, Brad Peter- son, Chris Stevens and Tara Rim- mer. The team was coached by J. Matheson Carnes.
The first Buckskin World
Show was held in Redding, Cali- fornia, August 27.
The Palomino Horse Associ-
ation held their World Champi- onship Sale in Tulsa, OK on June 01,1988.
Lynda Harrison Sisson
wrote an article in The Rider scolding those horse owners and trainers on the way horses were
being presented at the show ring. These new show tactics were being ridiculed by many and they were insulting to the horse as well. The derogatory term was Peanut Rollers. The Rider re- ceived several letters in support for Lynda.
W.R. Smale 1979 Co. Ltd.
introduced a new fencing for horses.
The WHAO announced
their Western Classic Show for all registered light and heavy breeds. A horse and buggy sale and clinic was held at the Guthrie Buck Arena in Waterford, ON on June 11.
The Canadian 5th Carriage
Driving Classic was held in Cale- don Hills with 250 entries from across Canada and the USA at Tralee Farms.
Robert Wright, DVM was
appointed co-ordinator for equine programs and special projects the Ministry of Agriculture created
Every effort was made to in-
crease attendance at the Quarter Horse Racing day at Picov Downs. It was as always a fabu- lous day of QH Racing. We had a horse that competed there.
Frontier Saddlery held their
Annual Tent Sale with over 200 saddles in stock as well as tons of other items going at bargain prices. The event was held in Stouffville, ON.
The NRHA held a judges
seminar and demonstration rein- ing clinic with Dick Pieper the event was held at Humber Col- lege.

Here we were into our June issue and breeders were still running advertise- ments on breeding horses. Pat and Clare Smith of
this position. June 25 -26 was the Annual
Affiliated Club Championship show at the Paris Fair Grounds. If you were there you knew the fun and excitement of a really well run and organized horse event.
Wilsonville, ON knew the advan- tage of advertising in The Rider well ahead of the breeding sea- son. They wanted there horses out front and remembered.
Stonebridge Farms in Arva,
ON, world class breeder of Straight Egyptian Arabian horses and one of the Worlds largest horse farms announced plans for a gala share holders meeting and auction. The June 4th event saw an attendance of over 10,000.
Willow Crest Horsemans
Centre held a two day Reining Clinic with Roger Brazeau, NRHA World Champion rider. The event was held on July 9-10.
Bill Oja’s column had at-
tracted a lot of attention from Readers of The Rider. It seems that there were a lot of C and W fans in our readership.
My Turn Not much to gripe about this
issue. I was at the Grand Opening of the new Ancaster Agricultural Event Centre. The Gala Opening was a fund raiser event. I met a lot of old friends but a lot were missing. This facility will knock

the socks off the horse industry. I understand that the facility is booking fast. Congratulations to the board of directors for taking such a bold and expensive step. Just for the record The Rider’s first edition had the total front page dedicated to the Old An- caster Fair Grounds featuring the Ancaster Saddle Club. Please support Ukraine. We
did. Our sister company Orange aPEEL sent $6,000 worth of Hand Sanitizer over there. What have you done to help? Remember that you and
