New graduate apprenticeship programme embraced

Stacie Carruthers, Financial Controller at

Turnbull & Scott Ltd, will join the graduate apprenticeship programme on a 4 year MA (Hons) business management course

here has been much interest from employers in Scotland in the new graduate

apprenticeship programme. It’s helping to address concerns from some quarters about the work- readiness of some traditional route graduates who have little ‘real-life’ work experience, but for others it provides talented employees who may have been reticent about embarking on a university course straight from school with a real opportunity to take their learning, while still employed, to a new higher or broader level. Deublin discusses slip rings

D

of Turnbull & Scott Ltd admits that twelve years ago when a very bright young school leaver he interviewed for a junior accounts role was unsure of taking up a place at University, he didn’t do what others might and persuade her to go for the ‘opportunity of a lifetime’. One might say selfishly, but in fact that’s not quite the case. Peter, a chartered accountant, and a natural coach knew he could develop her in the accountancy field and over the intervening years has encouraged her to formalise

from a stationary device to a rotating one. This electromechanical device is also known as a rotary electrical connector or rotary electrical joint. Electrical slip rings are free to rotate without limitations, unlike cables which twist and eventually break. Where are they used? -

Typical applications include revolving automation or control systems. Winding, unwinding and slitting operations, turbines, beverage processing and industrial washers are also common slip ring applications.

her learning and sit CIMA accounting exams. This highly valued employee, Stacie Carruthers, has since worked her way to the position of Financial Controller. As a testament to her potential, Stacie, not yet 30 years old, now wants to broaden her business knowledge and skills as she believes she will be able to add further value to the business. She has identified that the new graduate apprenticeship programme is the ideal vehicle for her to do this. Stacie explained her interest in this new challenge, “I had been considering re-starting my CIMA studies, but when I received an email regarding a degree in business management I found it more appealing and more relevant to my career goals. I felt like it would be a great opportunity for my own personal development, whilst also benefiting Turnbull & Scott. I have a lot of experience on day to day running of the business here, however I aim to be working at a more senior level in the company, in a Finance Director role, and believe getting a degree would put me in a better position to do so. How do they work? - Electrical slip rings work by holding a sliding contact (brush) against a ring (conductor ring). One part, typically the brush, is stationary while the other, typically the conductor ring, rotates. Lead wires to the brush and conductor ring terminate internally and provide electrical connections to devices on either side of the slip ring. In general, conductor rings are mounted on the rotor and terminated with lead wires that run axially through the rotor to one end.
