British Paper Machinery News 11 Folding clever
Cardboard trays or secondary packaging must be geared precisely to the product and its logistical requirements. As the means of presenting the goods they should also meet the handling and design concepts of the respective customers. The Tablomat LE from Wächter folds and glues a wide variety of formats. The configurable safe small controller PNOZmulti 2 and the safety gate system PSENslock from Pilz are responsible for a flexible operating concept, rapid implementation of format changes and smooth operation.
E
nd-of-line packaging is no different from the rest of the packaging sector in
demanding flexibility and efficiency. Rapid changes to new formats, including the ability to adjust sensors and actuators quickly and simply are essential issues relevant to Industrie 4.0 and batch size 1. Over the years, packaging machine manufacturers have changed relay- based hardware for more reliable and flexible software systems closely associated with the optimisation of safety solutions, which essentially are also software- based.
Customer-centric SME with aspirations - In the process of redesigning an erector machine, Wächter Packautomatik GmbH & Co. KG was faced with renewing the control and safety technology. The family business from Westphalia, Germany is
drying, the fibres become set at zero degrees, resulting in an extremely lightweight air shaft with the rigidity of steel. The carbon is completely protected on all sides by aluminium and cannot be cut into or damaged. Due to its low inertia, the shafts can quickly accelerate and run at very high speeds that are unapproachable with steel or even wound carbon lug models. The pultrusion design is available in 3, 4, 5, 6 and 6.75 inch diameters.

dedicated to the automation of packaging processes and for over 43 years has planned, designed and constructed mainly special purpose machinery in the packaging technology sector having also made a name for itself in many other sectors.
Automation concept from
Pilz - There was a clear need for action because the previous model of the Tablomat LE no longer met the increased demands for performance and efficiency. "The mechanical safety switches used on the safety gates were prone to problems and sometimes produced implausible diagnostic messages. With convincing alternatives to intricate and complex wiring we thought seriously about sustainable automation and safety concepts," says Jürgen Schulte, Production Manager at Wächter.
Many years of trusted contact

with Pilz led to the company presenting its latest automation and safety technology and subsequently relevant objectives were defined jointly. "We worked with Pilz to develop a solution that would best satisfy both our own needs and those of our customers and we were able to test the potential of Pilz products rigorously in advance," Jürgen Schulte stresses.
Flexible, reliable and safe case erector - The new Tablomat LE from Wächter Packautomatik is an automated tray and case erector measuring around 6 x 3 x 2.5 metres, used to manufacture secondary packaging for a wide range of products. Instead of the previous mechanical safety switches that were prone to problems, the
New scanner interface developed
C
ompact Engineering Limited has developed a device to replace legacy computer systems used on older scanners to read data from the scanner on the paper machine for conversion so that the data can be used by on- machine actuators.
Many older scanner systems have computers that are no longer supported by their manufacturers. When these computers fail the papermakers are deprived of vital quality control tools such as steam showers, water spray re-moisturisers and infrared CD moisture profile control dryers that Compact is
famed for.
Compact’s interface reads the scanner communication protocol and calculates a 4 to 20mA output that is relayed to either a Siemens or Allen Bradley PLC that replaces the now redundant computer. The system is modular to cope with a variable number of actuator zones ... the greater the number of control zones, the more PLC outputs are used. The system will communicate with a broad range of standard communication protocols such as RS232, RS485, Modbus, Profibus, Profinet and Control Net. As with Compact’s replacement

four safety gates on the Tablomat LE are now fitted with non-contact safety gate systems PSENslock from Pilz. "Together with Pilz we have achieved all the stated objectives. The case erector is impressive with its clear, streamlined wiring and it can be quickly reconfigured for new tasks. The plant enjoys virtually trouble-free operation and the operator has a comprehensive overview of the current machine status at all times," says Jürgen Schulte.

emitters, the aim is to breathe new life and improved performance into older infrared dryer systems. A recent conversation with a customer in the USA about the performance of the replacement emitters the mill bought three years ago revealed that they have not used any lamps and the moisture variation in the moisture profile has been cut in half. The mill also said that by their calculations, the payback on their investment was well under 300 days!
