Getting the best...

Who do you rely on for proper

installation and repair of paper drying equipment?

P roper installation,

maintenance and repair of paper drying equipment is important to ensure all dryers remain in service to maximise drying capacity. In addition to maintaining the mechanical components, assessing internal drying equipment plays a vital role in dryer reliability and safety. Annual dryer inspections, an important preventative maintenance activity, ensure dryer and equipment reliability and safety and steam system efficiency. It can also help prevent catastrophic failures of equipment when done regularly and

business but has recently engineered and installed two Voith Elephant filter systems. Both these units were installed in reject removal applications with one removing gross contaminants from a waste plant and the other removing much smaller contaminants prior to an effluent treatment plant bioreactor. The company has also installed a further two units in fibre recovery applications where they have yielded significant fibre savings and hence cost reductions. In all four applications Poole Projects Ltd., the Radcliffe, UK based independent consultant

engineering company, did the initial pre-engineering through to the detail design and commissioning. Three of the four applications were completed as semi turn-key projects where the customer purchased the filter direct from the supplier. Poole Projects then supplied the peripheral plant including pumps, tanks, steelwork, piping, valves, instrumentation and control systems, MCC’s, mechanical installation, E & I installation and civil works.

uilding and strengthening its talent pool is a key focus at Turnbull & Scott Ltd in full recognition that talented people represent its lifeblood. As part of this quest, the Industrial Heat Exchanger division recently welcomed Asif Ijaz to its heat exchanger design team. Asif is a chemical engineering graduate from Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh and impressed technical director Dr Stuart McIlwain not only with his very clear interests in heat transfer and thermodynamics, but his sparky ambition. Asif enthused, “From the earliest stage in my degree I was captivated by the way two fluids can exchange heat energy without actually coming into contact and the theory behind this. Then discovering the different ways you can exchange heat between fluids and the variety of heat exchangers used to achieve this, each with their own advantages and disadvantages, made me eager to learn more.” And learn more he did, winning the B.Eng. design

prize with a project that involved the design of heat exchangers, distillation columns and pumps ... and so his journey continues at Turnbull & Scott.

Born and bred in Glasgow, Asif carries the genial personality and strong interpersonal skills that very often characterise individuals from those environs. Peter Murphy, Managing Director remarked, “These qualities are important to the company and none more so than in our engineering team. Getting to know our customers and understand their business and individual project requirements is fundamental to us, and to do that effectively you need to possess good interpersonal and communication skills. Asif has those in spades!”

by experienced professionals. Inspections identify suspected issues from suspect sounds, flooding and high drive loads, production and speed

inconsistencies and mill policies. TAPPI TIP 0402-16, a guideline for inspection and Non Destructive Testing (NDT) of cast iron paper machine dryers, is an industry standard in papermaking. It supports the importance of NDT to identify deficiencies and prioritise recommendations for dryer section improvements. NDT service is recommended, and in many cases required every five years. This

includes visual inspection of the internal dryer and drying equipment (eg syphons and Turbulator®

bars)

and the external surface of the dryer, ultrasonic testing to determine shell thickness and determine if there are cracked bolts and magnetic testing for crack assessment.

Having reliable, skilled mill resources available to perform necessary preventative services of paper drying equipment is becoming more and more of a challenge and can lead to unexpected maintenance costs if delayed or not done at all. Many
