2 Inspire The news magazine of Woodkirk Academy
AT Woodkirk Academy we take our responsibility seriously in ensuring students are the best they can be as 21st-century global citizens. Our students know the importance of healthy lifestyles, the need to plan for a sustainable future and how events of the past continue to shape today’s society. We are proud of the successes they achieve both in school and beyond. I hope you enjoy reading this edition of Inspire.
Representing you
SIXTH Form Head Student, Tia, says, “The role of Head Student is about being friendly, helpful and, quite simply, nice to everyone and anyone. Listening to what peers have to say and trying to implement their ideas or help with any concerns they may have.” Deputy Head Student, Shereena, added,
“As part of the Student Council, it’s my duty to represent the school and Sixth Form. I do this by taking part in fundraisers and representing the school in the wider community. Being on the Council is also a great opportunity to voice the opinions of students by raising their ideas and issues.”
Star citizens Model
Mr Jones, Principal strategies
Top of the class: Stacey, Tia and Shereena.
YEAR 13 student Joseph is a skilled model maker. “Making Airfix models is more than just creating planes, ships and vehicles; it lets people understand the past and present,” he says. “Being part of a model society has given me a new understanding of how others see the world. This is shown in strategies during war games. I have participated in five and won all five. This is the best ratio in West Yorkshire.”
Karting challenge
MY name is Sam and I’m in Year 7. I started karting in 2019 at the age of seven. My first kart was a Cadet kart with a 200cc Honda engine and 8 horsepower. In 2022, I won the Teesside Cadet Championship against 34 other drivers over eight rounds. This year, I moved up a class to Junior Rotax, which uses a 125cc engine with 25 horsepower. I enjoy racing at tracks across the UK and this year will be a new challenge with my bigger, faster kart.
On the podium: Sam.
