HOSPITALITY & RETAIL A LAVISH AFFAIR

Tile and stone specialist Lapcida recently worked on the restoration of Grantley Hall, an important 17th-century building located in the North Yorkshire countryside between Harrogate and Ripon.

Grade II* listed, this once-magnificent private residence had been used as a training college and then left empty for the best part of a decade. It has now been fully restored, extended and transformed into a superb country house five- star hotel with every conceivable modern luxury, from its 47 rooms and suites to the fine dining restaurants and spa.

Lapicida, chosen to supply floor and wall surfaces throughout the property, worked with the designer to deploy a wide range of materials to match the classical grandeur of the restored building as well as providing products to maximise the budget across a range of different requirements. A combination of natural stone, porcelain and ceramic tiles were used throughout the hotel, and bespoke fabrication of opulent marbles and limestones were undertaken for the bathrooms, swimming pool and spa. In addition to the lavish front-of- house areas, Lapicida was also commissioned to provide quality solutions for private spaces, including staff accommodation.

Lapicida’s extensive Harrogate workshops combine traditional stonemasonry with state-of- the-art manufacturing, giving the company real flexibility in responding to project briefs. Their workmanship shines throughout the Grantley Hall development, with important design focus areas including the St Tropez limestone floor with Birr Black limestone inserts in the hotel’s splendid main entrance. These two materials are a design theme carried through to other areas; from the spa to the wine cellar, Lapicida has used them to create decorative floors, borders, skirtings and even the grand ‘Bramante-style’ spiral staircase that links the original hall with a newly constructed building.

Lapicida supplies a range of natural stone, porcelain and ceramic tiles to transform a luxury hotel and wellness retreat in Yorkshire.

Other key natural materials used by Lapicida in this project include Verde Guatemala, San Marino, Elvira and Jurassic marbles, crafted into feature floors, tabletops and bars as well as bathroom vanities, bath decks and shower bases. Carrara marble was used in the classical statues supplied by Lapicida – replicas of Venus de Milo, Kouros and Venus Bathing – each artfully positioned in the river which runs alongside the hotel. Porcelains were utilised where practicality was needed in the property. Motif Calacatta Gold slab, a dramatic and striking quarter-matched porcelain, was used across the floor of the 18-metre swimming pool.

A highlight of this project was the impressive paved exterior courtyard that was designed and installed using a range of natural granites. More usually found indoors, the picket and insert pattern was chosen to add design interest to the area; acting like a rug would in an interior setting, it clearly defines the courtyard area, creating the feeling of an outdoor room. The distinctive pattern proved so popular that Lapicida made the design available to all clients. Next generation, high- quality porcelain was chosen for the reproduction: crafted from pure clay and fired to 1200C, the tiles are extremely durable, frost-proof and anti-slip, making them perfect for high-traffic areas such as a garden terrace.

Jason Cherrington, Lapicida’s Director, said: “Grantley Hall is a remarkable project, and we’re extremely proud of our involvement with its renaissance. The design, the materials and the standard of finish is exceptional throughout, and we’re thrilled to have been able to showcase our finest stone, porcelain and ceramic within such a magnificent setting.”

Founded more than 30 years ago, Lapicida has worked on many projects: from stately homes and luxury villas to hotels and resorts, ranging from the ultra-luxurious Franklin Hotel in London (with interior designer Anouska Hempel) to properties within Antigua’s premium Jumby Bay development.
