CEVISAMA REVIEW VIVA ESPAÑA The Spanish Sector

Providing an overview of the state of Spanish manufacturing, Vicente Nomdedeu Lluesma President of ASCER, the Spanish Association of Ceramic Wall and Floor Tile Manufacturers, presented the latest export figures. He explained how contraction in demand from European markets has continued from 2022 and India and China have overtaken Spain in exports volume wise.

“Today, Europe only accounts for 8.4% of global production, compared with just 10 years ago when we clearly led the sector”, said Nomdedeu Lluesma. “Our products compete on international markets under unequal terms in comparison with other producers who face less demanding labour or environmental requirements, to give just a couple of examples.”

Nomdedeu Lluesma called for a balance in rules and urged customers to demand that non-EU suppliers comply strictly with the highest standards. He highlighted that Spanish suppliers strive for sustainability with decarbonisation and innovation but this also goes beyond natural resources with social and economic sustainability also integral.

ASCER’s view is that training is key to continuing improvement in ceramic production as innovation will lead to success. Seminars around the world will target distrubutors and architects as well as tile fixers with the aim of not only improving product and service performance but also changing consumer habits.

Despite the negative trend, Spain continues to lead production in the EU and as Cevisama demonstrated, its manufacturers continue to innovate and offer high-quality ceramics in every conceivable format.

Back to Nature

Taking inspiration from wood to travertine stone and lava, the natural-look was a key trend at this year’s Cevisama. As Spanish manufacturing techniques have evolved, many collections successfully emulate the tactile element of nature with rough, uneven, unrefined, cracked or even burnt surfaces.

Aparici’s Lava collection is presented as a combination of stone, with a harmonious movement of tones to create a sense of harmony and balance. Available in three sizes:100x100cm, 50x100cm and 60x60cm. 

The Cevisama tile fair celebrated its 40th edition in Valencia this spring. Editor Sarah Robinson visited the show with Tile of Spain to report on Spanish manufacturing and the top trends of 2024.

Luxury Sheen
