FOCUS ON FLOOR FINISHES & AFTERCARE Vinyl That Stays Vibrant
Vinyl flooring specialist Atrafloor shares insight into the tricks of the trade for retailers to help customers get the best out of their vinyl floor.
Many may assume that laying vinyl on tiled flooring isn’t advisable, but this can easily be done by applying a self- levelling compound to the tiles before applying the flooring. As a retailer, you can help out with the process by providing clear guidelines from the manufacturer on applying evenly to the floor.
Sparkle and Shine
Knowing what to consider when caring for vinyl flooring isn’t always so clear for owners. It is therefore vital that retailers are on-hand with all the advice customers need for a long- lasting vinyl floor- including its installation and how to clean and maintain it.
Layer Up
For areas and rooms over 15 sqm that receive a lot of traffic, we recommend gluing flooring down using F. Ball F44 adhesive and, to ensure a completely watertight floor, Wener Muller PVC Cold Welding Liquid Type A is recommended to seal the seams.
The help protect the vinyl and to allow for an easy wipe-down clean, Atrafloor flooring is fit with a protective wear layer on top - creating a highly durable product. Help out the customer by providing a maintenance guide that allows them to keep their flooring looking brand new.
First Things First
For many customers, their vinyl flooring purchase will be their first experience of vinyl flooring in their home, and they’ll need to work out how to replace their new flooring with what is currently in place. A great aspect of vinyl is that it can be installed on top of existing flooring. However, methods vary depending on the material.
For concrete, the flooring can be installed directly onto it if the surface is level. Check the moisture level of the subfloor with a hygrometer - if the reading is above 75%RH, this means that the surface is an effective damp-proof membrane; ideal conditions for installing vinyl flooring on top. A tip for levelling uneven concrete is to use a latex self-levelling compound.
If using vinyl on top of wood, a tip for the installer would be to first strip the floor of any previous covering, then secure 4 - 6mm of plywood to the wood surface before installing the vinyl on top of this.

After installation of the flooring, it should be cleaned with a water soluble soap cleaner solution made up of 5 litres of water diluted with 250ml of cleaner. Dirty water can be picked up with a mop or water vacuum and then the floor should be allowed time to dry. Repeat this process typically once or twice per year to keep to vinyl in its best condition. For more regular cleaning maintenance, simply wipe the flooring down with a dust mop and damp cloth or vacuum the floor, then remove spots with a damp cloth or cleaner solution.
It’s important to know whether vinyl is water-resistant or waterproof to be able to properly advise the customer on the placement and use of their flooring. Most would assume that vinyl flooring can be used outdoors if it is waterproof, but it should actually not be installed outside as the sun can wear and damage the design on the flooring.
