What are your main responsibilities?
I’m responsible for developing and implementing the Dräger UK & Ireland mobile gas detection strategy, so I work across a range of different industries, from water and utilities to food and beverage and police. I suppose I see my role as
being the voice of the customer within the business, so I spend a lot of my time visiting customers and making sure that we fully understand the needs of the markets and how Dräger can solve problems and help customers to the best of our ability.
I also work closely with the global team (Dräger is in over 190 countries and has 15,000 staff globally) to ensure our product roadmap aligns with current and future needs of our customers, and collaborate with other colleagues in marketing and sales to develop ‘go to market’ strategies. It’s varied and interesting, which I very much enjoy.

How did you get into the industry? I’ve worked in health and safety since 2010, initially in
vehicle telemetry systems, dealing with major haulage companies. I was also involved with the telematics project team working with Volvo to add driver assist features into modern cars, a project which was featured on Top Gear. I did a lot of work with Brake, the road safety charity during this period.

What did you do before this job? For the 11 or so years prior to joining Dräger, I worked
in the field of gas detection and monitoring at another manufacturer. I had various roles during my time there, including Regional Sales Manager for Asia Pacific, Brazil and Northern Europe, and my final role, Head of Marketing & Communications, where I was responsible for the creation and delivery of the global marketing strategy, as well as contributing to the business strategy as part of the Senior Leadership Team.

What do you do in a typical day? Every day is different, which is one of the key reasons
why I enjoy what I do so much. It’s such a diverse role, from undertaking market research, attending exhibitions and events and having discussions with customers to determine current and future market needs, to feeding back to our regional product team in our global HQ in Germany and working on tenders.

In each issue, we catch up with a health and safety professional to find out about their varied work/life balance. This month we caught up with Rebecca Dodds, Marketing Manager of Mobile Gas Management at Draeger Safety UK.
What’s your most memorable or proudest work moment?
I once had to give a presentation on future sensor technologies to a team from NASA. It was probably the most nerve-wracking moment of my career so far, as well as my proudest. But I’d like to think there are many more such moments still to come.
What’s the best part of your job? For me, it’s the fact that what I do helps to keep
people safe. Our equipment is designed to save and protect lives and that fills me with pride and a sense of real purpose, which helps drive me to bring my best to my job every single day.
What’s the worst part of your job? Doing my expenses – without a doubt!
Do you have any advice for anyone starting out in the industry?
Never stop learning and always keep pushing yourself that little bit further out of your comfort zone.
How do you like to unwind? I love the outdoors, being in nature helps me to
relax. My partner and I are currently ticking off the mountains in the Lake District and our most recent was Sharp Edge. It’s not one for the faint-hearted, in fact let me rephrase that – it was terrifying! But it was also amazing; the feeling after we’d done it was incredible.

What career would you be in if you weren’t doing this?
This is an easy one, I watched a video (yes, a VHS!) in school about eco-tourism in the Amazon Rainforest when I was around 14 years old and it made a real impression on me. I would have loved to have been out there hosting groups and taking them on tours around the rainforest and living in the wild. Maybe one day.
