10 QUESTIONS WITH… Q4

Q5 Q6 Q7 THE PROFESSION?

Methodology and legal requirements may be the same but application is not. Keep it simple and don’t over complicate things.

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO COMBAT NEGATIVE ATTITUDES TO HEALTH AND SAFETY?

For me it’s about attracting talented young people into the profession from school age and graduates who are passionate about making a difference. It’s also about promoting Health and Safety in a positive light with more case studies that demonstrate that good practices can improve a company’s performance and sustainability.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? I started off straight from school as an electrical

apprentice with South Glamorgan County Council.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE HEALTH AND SAFETY INDUSTRY?

Like most within the industry it wasn’t something I planned to do. I was working for a manufacturing company as a Project Manager and was asked to support the implementation of OHSAS 18001 and ISO 14001 and it all followed from there.

IF YOU COULD HAVE ANY SUPERPOWER FOR A DAY, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

Time travel, mostly because it would offer me unlimited hours in the day to actually talk to people face to face, rather than playing email tennis all day.

Q9

WHAT DO YOU THINK THE FUTURE HOLDS FOR THE HEALTH AND SAFETY INDUSTRY?

I feel the industry may become more pragmatic with less legislation, which could encourage companies, employees and society in general, to appreciate the importance of health and safety.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY?

Now that depends on the amount, but yes I would go into early retirement!

Q10

GARY ESCOTT, DIRECTOR OF ONGRADE LTD. ASKED: HOW CAN THE USE OF

TECHNOLOGY BE BETTER INTEGRATED AND ACCEPTED TO IMPROVE HEALTH AND SAFETY PRACTICES ACROSS ALL INDUSTRIES?

We need systems that are built around both the end user and client’s needs, not just an off-the-shelf product. It’s embedded in the organisation’s safety culture; using its own branding and terminology. It’s about establishing a meaningful and powerful MI that can be used for future planning and risk management.
