APOLLO PROTECTS HERTFORDSHIRE
UNIVERSITY Apollo Fire Detectors have announced the installation of its innovative SOTERIA® range of detectors at The University of Hertfordshire, home to over 25,000 staff and students.
The University’s ‘2020 Estates Vision’ is a detailed plan that sets out an ongoing maintenance and improvement schedule for its facilities. As part of the schedule of works, the Vision outlined a replacement of the existing fire alarm system across its College Lane campus. To carry out this programme, Imtech – commissioned to carry out refurbishment works at the campus – chose Lloret Fire & Security to install the fire protection system.

“We are unbelievably honoured to receive the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category,” commented Emma Wells, Founder and Director at Jackloc. “To be recognised by the highest honour in UK business, renowned across the world is an incredibly proud moment for Jackloc and is the result of our continued commitment to innovation and safety.”
Jackloc was founded in 2003 by Emma and her late sister Deborah, with their other sister Judith Burrows joining as a Director in 2008. The business is built on the pioneering design created by their father Derek Horne, who after speaking with a hotelier who came perilously close to a falling child, created a simple, yet effective window restrictor to dramatically reduce the risk. From its humble beginnings, Jackloc’s products are now exported and used in hotels across the world, including five-star hotels in Iraq, The Ritz London, the Travelodge Hotel
Group and the Dream House Hotel in Manhattan, New York.
Named after Deborah’s son Jack, Jackloc has grown to encompass a full range of high-performance window and door restrictors including push- and-turn, swivel/stud, folding and the original key-lockable Jackloc. Designed and manufactured in the UK and extensively tested to BS EN standards, Jackloc is approved by The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene in the City of New York and The Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council in the United Arab Emirates.
“Jackloc has come an awfully long way from working at the dining room table,” added Judith. “We are supplying Jacklocs across the world and we’re working in close partnership with local NHS trusts and leading hotel chains here in the UK. Whilst this award is truly amazing and something we never thought we would receive, our hard work doesn’t stop. We are dedicated to reducing the number of injuries and fatalities across the world caused by falling from windows.”

and interfaces fitted to supplement them. In total, over 1,100 Apollo devices now protect the University.
pupils, Lloret specified the Apollo SOTERIA® detector range, installed in conjunction with the new Intelligent Manual Call Point from Apollo. Talking about the choice, John Griffith, Head of Building Surveying at the University, commented: “We were looking for a technologically-advanced fire detection system to protect buildings that are used for a variety of activities, including lecture theatres, offices and creative arts studios.
The fire detection system upgrade saw over 680 SOTERIA® devices installed across the four buildings, including 500 smoke detectors, 70 heat detectors and 107 call points, with numerous VAD sounder bases
The new SOTERIA® range from Apollo offers the next generation in fire detection expertise with a host of features, ideal for protecting the University, its students and staff. The advanced technology significantly improves the detection of smoke, enhances the reliability of the detection process, and reduces the risk of false alarms. Stringent testing procedures offer peace of mind, with products comprehensively tested to exceed EN54-5 and EN54-7 standards.
A fast turnaround was needed and, because the buildings remained in use during the day, installers worked 12-hour night shifts to complete the project thus minimising disruption for students and staff.“The trust we put in our contractor and their supply chain has paid off,” summarised John Griffith.
