there and will be launching many new lines. It’s exciting as I know they are going to appeal to a wide cross section of our customer base and will offer some great new ideas that are well ahead of our competitors.
Our whole ‘raison d’etre’ is to make sure we always produce workwear that fits well, is extremely comfortable as well as being practical and hard wearing. I know what it’s like spending most of the day on my knees on a construction site and if you aren’t wearing flexible, well-fitting clothes, you feel so much more tired at the end of the day, as well as not doing your general health any good.

I’m also working with one of our main distributors, WTC of Milton Keynes in helping them to represent Engel at the Flooring Show in Harrogate in September. They specialise in clothing for floor layers and carpet and tile fitters, and are especially keen on promoting our new, ‘X-Treme’ stretchable work trousers there. On top of that I’m liaising with the marketing team in Denmark who are busy planning all aspects of our new product launches and the administration of our stand at this year’s A + A exhibition in Frankfurt in October.
Although the car is kitted out with the hands-free, blue- tooth/Sari automatic call answering and dialling mobile phone gadgetry, I try to use it as little as possible and have regular stops to catch up with people and have a few minutes break.
I’m an early riser so I’m normally up and dressed around 6.30am, having done half an hour or so of stretches and deep breathing at an open window; a coffee and a bit of breakfast and straight onto the laptop. I know from my diary of course who I’m due to visit each day but I like to check my schedule so that I don’t waste any time or keep my customers waiting!
I do a lot of mileage as I cover the whole of the UK and Ireland so 2,000 miles a month is not uncommon. Its better now though as we’ve just appointed a well-qualified chap who is helping to take some of the pressure off, by focusing on looking after some customers in the electrical and plumbing trades.
Once my journey is planned, I can then start looking at other aspects of the job such as liaising with the head office in Denmark on our heavy involvement at the Safety & Health Expo exhibition at London’s ExCeL. We’ll have a big stand

A major part of the job I enjoy is the variety of people I meet each day and developing and maintaining a personal rapport with my customers. Part of every conversation is actually a bit of research; I pick up comments on certain work situations relating to PPE, I can feed them back to the head office for consideration. Obviously everything doesn’t always go as smoothly as you’d like, now and again there are some minor problems to sort out, but it’s the regular communication we have with our customers that I think is appreciated, as we all know how frustrating it is not to be able to speak to someone face to face if you have a problem.
A less fun part of the day’s work, although necessary, is the report writing. I’m normally back home or at a hotel by around 6pm. The report takes about 30 minutes to do and then it’s time to relax. Well, maybe, after thinking a bit about the day ahead.
