WASHROOMS
INFECTION CONTROL: PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS
Paul Mulready, Marketing Manager of Northwood Hygiene Products Ltd, talks about why it’s important for washroom systems to be able to deal with greater demands as more of us return to the workplace.
Most people understand the importance of handwashing for our welfare and facilities managers can help to minimise the spread of viruses and germs by continuing to provide effective washroom hygiene. And, with more people using washrooms as we resume more activities, it’s vital to ensure that these systems don’t just deliver optimal hygiene – they must be robust and easy to maintain too. So, what do facilities managers need to consider?
Consumption, damage and misuse One consequence of more visitors in washrooms is that supplies of soap and towels deplete faster, so janitors need to replenish them more frequently. It’s therefore important that dispensers are both high capacity and simple to refill to minimise staff time in the washroom.
developed for demanding washrooms, helping to deliver improved washroom hygiene standards, whilst saving money and reducing waste.
No waste, no mess With two toilet tissue and four hand towel dispensers, plus a soap dispenser, our range includes the TwinJumbo toilet roll dispenser – the industry’s first twin jumbo high- capacity proprietary toilet roll dispenser – which holds up to 800 metres of roll to minimise the need for frequent replenishing.
The long-lasting Infinity paper system means that only one roll is used at a time to eliminate waste and deliver costs savings. Holding up to 250 metres each, the roll towel dispensers provide approximately 500 dries, with some offering stub-roll transfer to ensure zero waste.
The Raphael folded towel dispenser has a 1,000-sheet capacity and all Raphael hand drying systems dispense one at a time flat sheets to prevent overuse. To further reduce over usage and minimise any mess in the washroom, our dispensers have been designed not to free roll.
Boosting hygiene The Raphael hand drying dispensers provide contactless dispensing, whilst the toilet tissue dispenser incorporates a Biokleen treated handle to inhibit the growth and spread of bacteria. Made from a single-piece shell, these dispensers are easy to wipe clean and all towels and rolls are fully enclosed for added hygiene.
Increased washroom use puts greater pressure on the dispensers themselves, which are subject to more wear and tear than usual. These units need to provide reliable service, so it’s essential to choose ones that are made from hardwearing materials that can withstand knocks and scratches.
More footfall in washrooms also means that they are more vulnerable to vandalism and abuse. Not only does this add to labour and material costs, it’s also an unnecessary disruption for visitors.
At Northwood, we’re helping businesses to promote effective hygiene practices and maintain their washrooms efficiently. Our comprehensive Raphael range was

Our soap dispensers use foam soap, are easy to use and deliver a generous shot size to encourage single use. They are non-drip to help keep spaces clean and every soap cartridge comes with a new nozzle to minimise bacteria harbouring.
Functional and easy to use Our Raphael dispensers aid the efficient management of the washroom, but they are also simple to operate. Strong and durable, the smoke and blue coloured units are both translucent, whilst the white dispenser features a transparent rear panel to allow maintenance teams to immediately see if they need topping up.
Washrooms play a key role in keeping people safe and we’re proud to play our part and support the continued fight against disease.
