FLUTTR SUPPORTS HOSPITALITY BUSINESSES SAVE ON

ENERGY AND COSTS The UK hospitality industry consumes 21,000GWh of energy every year – equivalent to powering 1.2m homes. An energy efficiency survey undertaken by the Government Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) indicated the potential to save at least 4,300 GWh through more energy efficient practices - which equates to an annual saving of £435m.

Why does it matter?

Energy costs account for around 10% of a hotel’s operating costs. The Carbon Trust has stated that reducing energy costs is one of the simplest ways for a hospitality business to increase their profitability. Any reduction in costs will have a direct positive impact on the bottom line.

The environmental impact of a hotel’s energy consumption should also not be underestimated – it typically makes up around 60% of the CO2 emissions generated by a building. In 2019 the UK government made a commitment to bring the greenhouse gas emissions of the country to net zero by 2050. One of the ways they are working towards this goal is through tightening the regulations on non-domestic Energy- Performance Certificates and thereby reinforcing the need for the sector to upgrade its building stock.

Becoming more energy efficient will lower the environmental impact of business premises and save them money. Within the hospitality industry there is an additional incentive from customers, with research indicating that sustainability concerns are influencing consumer choice. A Visit England survey found that 58% of people would prefer to stay in accommodation with greener practices.

What’s our solution?

We have been working with BEIS since 2018 to develop an app designed specifically to help smaller businesses in the hospitality industry become more energy efficient. Our app, fluttr, is a bespoke energy management tool for the sector which focuses on incremental energy and cost savings by encouraging

behavioural changes and facilitating more energy efficient building upgrades.

How does it do this?

Fluttr is linked to the smart meter roll out and easily accesses live energy data from our customers. We show the most relevant data in a very simple and easy to understand format - a week on week comparison of energy consumption and cost savings. Fluttr uses industry metrics like room nights or food covers to allow businesses to understand how much energy they use per overnight guest or per meal served. It can also display half-hourly energy data, highlighting consumption hot spots.

The app gives energy saving behavioural change tips tailored to specific job roles within the business - for example a chef will receive different advice to a housekeeper.

Fluttr also has chain functionality which allows an area manager or owner to quickly compare energy use and cost savings across different sites.

All of this helps engage the whole team towards the same goal. In two months of testing our first testers saved over £30,000 and enough energy to power 64 homes for a whole year.

What’s next?

We recognise that behavioural changes can only go so far if the equipment in use is not efficient. That’s why we created the Fluttr marketplace – where we can connect hospitality businesses with third party suppliers who are able to make the necessary hardware changes to help businesses become more efficient.

Our approved list of suppliers covers areas as diverse as boilers, lighting, smart meters and sensors,

BMS systems, kitchen equipment and heating and cooling solutions. Fluttr also offers a link to lending options to help partially or fully fund the project through our third-party finance provider. We are confident that the savings our customers make will more than cover the cost. Once installed, an IPMVP regression algorithm within the app will be able to tell the customer, and the supplier, how impactful the project was and calculate a return on investment.

How can you get involved?

The pilot of the marketplace begins in November 2020, and we are looking to work with both hospitality businesses who want to reduce their energy costs, and suppliers who have a strong track record of installing energy efficient retrofits. It is totally free to get involved.
