TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR LIGHTING TO CREATE BRIGHTER SPACES, SAVE

ENERGY AND CUT CARBON Whilst 2020 has presented all of us with huge challenges, it has also forced us to review our ways of working and look to create a better future. With most office staff continuing to work from home over the next few months, there is a window of opportunity for facilities managers to embark on office refurbishment projects such as LED replacement without causing disruption to staff on site.

Refresh lighting with LEDs for a brighter year in 2021

Royal Greenwich Council recently selected NCS Technology to install new LED lighting throughout the Council’s head office at The Woolwich Centre, south-east London. The work will be undertaken over the autumn and winter months so that it is complete for spring 2021.

The Woolwich Centre spans seven floors and includes open plan offices, meeting rooms, stairwells and corridors, presentation rooms and the Woolwich Library. There is a wide range of lighting in place, from down lights and flush/inset tube lighting to suspended fittings and fluorescent panels.

Work with specialist lighting consultants to optimise building performance

NCS worked with commercial lighting consultants Earlsmann to design and trial the new lighting, which involves LED replacement of over 5,600 fluorescent light fittings across the Woolwich Centre. The existing centralised lighting control system was in urgent need of replacement; components were failing, and it was no longer supported by the manufacturer. The Council was also keen to switch to LED to realise energy savings and reduce its carbon footprint.

Earlsmann’s team undertook a site visit to review the existing lighting, and found it was possible to use local sensors to control each bank of fittings. These sensors will make it easier to isolate and rectify any future

issues, reducing disruption and optimising building performance.

Bespoke LED lighting helps to minimise disruption and control costs

In the meeting rooms and corridors, continuous luminaires were inset into the ceiling. Removal of these fittings would have caused significant disruption and damage to the surrounding décor, so was therefore not a viable option. Earlsmann designed and manufactured bespoke new gear trays and diffusers for these luminaires to adapt them to LED use, avoiding the cost and disruption of total replacement. Earlsmann also created new LED emergency lighting pods for the stairwells that helped to maintain the appearance of these areas.

Earlsmann modelled each area to confirm light levels met client and CIBSE requirements, with emergency lighting checked to ensure compliance with BS5266. Once the Council had reviewed and accepted the concept, a process which was supported by Earlsmann’s production of CAD lighting simulations, NCS installed trial areas to demonstrate

that the new light levels were acceptable and to give staff the opportunity to see the benefits.

Achieve impressive energy and carbon savings of over 60%

From Spring 2021, the new lighting will provide an improved working environment for Council employees, and for visitors to Woolwich Library. It will also dramatically reduce the Council’s energy consumption by up to 60%, with annual CO2 output reduced by 400 tonnes.
