As he elaborated on his story and how it has changed his life, Jason came back to one point – the accident was avoidable. If he had followed a safe system of work this wouldn’t have happened.
Jason summarised with several key points everyone is complicit in unsafe practices, not just the person who is taking the shortcut; jobs don’t become less dangerous, you simply become more confident taking risks, meaning our judgement becomes impaired; health and safety regulations and safe systems of work are there for a reason and should be followed at all times, no matter how tempting a short cut can be; and, take five seconds to speak up if you see something unsafe
As Jason reflects on his accident and on-site health and safety as a whole, he considers mental wellbeing to play a key part in maintaining a safe working environment. If people come to work well-rested, happy and in a good frame of mind, Jason theorises they are less likely to make mistakes or take shortcuts, reducing the risk of an accident. Here, he urged the audience to look after themselves and their mental wellbeing in order to be able to come to work as prepared as possible.

Health and safety training In addition to The Safety Sessions, we regularly engage our staff in practical health and safety training to ensure they are equipped with the tools they need to put their learnings into practice on site.

talking to staff to gain a case-by-case understanding of where extra training is needed for each individual. We’re fully certified to the Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems 45001 standard, have a division dedicated to testing and assessment and employ health and safety professionals within the group as well as external advice and consultancy.
Some of the practical training our people undergo include an induction, management development, professional and technical training, qualifications and health and safety training.
Starting with an induction, each new employee should be provided with information and instruction about how a company operates. The aim of this process is to enable the newcomer to adjust as quickly as possible to the new working environment and to achieve effectiveness in the safest way.
As well as induction training, it’s important to provide ongoing training to continually improve and build upon health and safety knowledge. Regular training, such as The Safety Sessions, helps individual employees take responsibility for ensuring a healthy and safe working environment.
At NSS, we also believe it’s important to offer people opportunities to grow, both personally and within a business. Training and further education in pursuit of qualifications are particularly useful for employees where a clear link can be made to meet service objectives.
