Summer is more than a maintenance window, suggests Paul Spencer, Marketing Director for ABUS UK and Ireland. It’s one of the few moments in the year when security can be assessed by FMs with the time, access and headspace to ask: Is our current setup still fit for purpose?
In a landscape where estates are evolving, usage patterns are changing and threats are becoming more opportunistic, security needs to be continually reassessed in real terms. This isn’t about compliance box-ticking or generic reviews.
That’s where the summer period becomes strategically important - not simply for identifying risk, but for implementing solutions that can be tested and embedded properly before footfall returns.
At ABUS, we work closely with facilities teams to support this process. From education and healthcare to commercial and logistics sites, the questions are often the same: what vulnerabilities have crept in unnoticed, and what systems or components need to evolve to meet current conditions?

Reassessing real-world risk Summer allows for a more candid look at how people, systems and infrastructure interact.
In schools, college and universities, sites are unoccupied or minimally used for weeks but still contain significant assets, including IT equipment, sports gear, tools and data. Unauthorised access or vandalism risks during this time exposes weaknesses in gates, storage locks or key management.
It’s when the mismatch between legacy systems and current needs can become visible. Many schools we support discover their access arrangements have become too fragmented - the result of piecemeal fixes over time.
