LEISURE & RETAIL

FROM FESTIVE RUSH TO NEW YEAR’S FRESH

Joanne Gilliard, CEO at Jangro, explains how FMs can elevate cleanliness in leisure and retail spaces throughout December and into the New Year.

With the Christmas season in full swing, leisure and retail spaces are teeming with activity. The festive period, while filled with excitement, also presents significant challenges in maintaining cleanliness. Facilities managers must ensure their spaces remain spotless and inviting despite the surge in foot traffic, unpredictable weather, and the increased presence of germs. As the rush dies down in January, the work for FMs doesn’t stop; instead, it shifts focus. They must not only recover from the festive rush but also set new standards for the year ahead.

December priorities During this busy shopping and leisure period, high-traffic areas such as entrances, washrooms, and food courts require constant attention. The increased footfall brings more dirt and bacteria, making frequent cleaning and disinfection essential.

Automated cleaning robots, also known as collaborative robots or ‘cobots’, can be a game-changer. They work in tandem with human operatives by handling repetitive tasks such as floor scrubbing, freeing up staff to concentrate on more intricate and specialised cleaning duties. This can be a lifesaver for large areas like shopping mall floors, which can quickly become hazardous at this time of year with wet weather increasing the risk of slips, trips, and falls.

However, smaller surface areas – particularly those that are high-touch – must not be neglected. Door handles, escalator rails, and payment terminals must be regularly disinfected to help prevent the spread of germs and maintain a healthy environment.

Washrooms are another area to which FMs must pay attention. In a recent Jangro podcast, we heard how gathering data can help ensure they are kept clean and well stocked: Footfall sensors are incredibly useful in washrooms, which typically have a high volume of traffic. By providing data, companies have insights into which areas need higher frequency cleaning, and those that require less and can use this to drive changes in the cleaning schedule. It might be that the disabled toilets get used on a one in 100 frequency, for example.

FMs should implement additional checks to ensure supplies do not run empty. To help prevent toilet tissue or hand drying dispensers from running out, choose high- capacity toilet roll or continuous towel roll systems that will last for a long period of time. This also helps minimise labour intensive repeat refilling of dispensers throughout the day.

A new year, a new focus In January, the focus shifts to setting new standards for the year ahead. This is the perfect time for deep cleaning and restoration. Deep cleaning carpets and polishing floors can help restore spaces to their pristine condition. Jangro has recently launched Carpet Care, powered by Jangro AI (Beta) – a virtual assistant for all things related to carpet maintenance. This smart tool offers practical advice on the best techniques for cleaning various carpet fibres, plus product recommendations and trouble- shooting tips. This smart tool offers instant, reliable guidance to help keep carpets looking their best and make their maintenance easier than ever.

The beginning of a new year is the perfect opportunity for a fresh start, enabling FMs to review existing practices and introduce new ones that are more effective, sustainable, and cost-efficient.

Partnering with a trusted supplier, like Jangro, is the best way to ensure consistent performance throughout 2025 with a clean slate. This guarantees that FMs purchase products at competitive prices, offering excellent value, effectiveness, and sustainability – helping them to meet their company’s own green goals. What’s more, added value is provided through Jangro’s CPD-accredited training platform, the Learning Management Solution (LMS), which ensures best practices are consistently followed.

By embracing innovative solutions and forming strong partnerships, FMs can ensure their spaces remain pristine and inviting. With the right strategies in place, 2025 can be a year of elevated standards and exceptional cleanliness in leisure and retail environments.
