individuals with the flexibility to either quietly relax and focus away from the commotion or move and fidget freely without distracting others.

Material choices

The choice of materials can also significantly affect how neurodiverse individuals respond to their environment, as revealed by our Human Conscious Design Platform. For example, students sensitive to noise will benefit from sound-absorbing and acoustic materials, which soften background noise and allow them to stay focused. On the other hand, individuals sensitive to bright, artificial light will find matt, low-sheen surfaces preferable, as they minimise glare compared to shiny, reflective materials.

Consideration of colour, texture, and pattern

Colour, texture, and pattern application are also crucial in preventing sensory overload. Areas meant to stimulate creativity and encourage interaction can benefit from vibrant colours that maintain engagement, while tranquil spaces might be better suited to muted tones and subtle patterns to reduce 'visual noise.'

Looking forward

HCDP is already demonstrating its advanced capabilities, having been deployed in projects such as The Nightingale House Care Home in Stirling by JM Architects and used by AXI Studios to innovate in palliative care design with the new St. Ann’s Hospice in Greater Manchester. For AXI Studios, leveraging this technology was a game-changer, particularly as it was their first healthcare project and they needed to acquire specialised knowledge at speed.

Now, with insights from various neurodiverse perspectives, the technology is advancing even further, and its evolution is expected to continue as our understanding grows. By empowering those responsible for designing and building infrastructure to learn, explore, and incorporate alternate perspectives that might otherwise be overlooked, HCDP is helping to create more interesting, inspiring, and supportive spaces that

accommodate a wider range of needs and preferences. https://professionals.tarkett.co.uk/en_GB/
