Tarkett explores how companies can redefine modern spaces with human- consious design, and how its virtual reality platform can help achieve this aim.


Technology’s ever-evolving capabilities are being leveraged to address some of modern society’s current downfalls, one of which is developing more inclusive environments that enable everyone, not just the majority, to thrive.


As we learn more about the world and the diverse brains that inhabit it, the term ‘neurodiversity’—encompassing individuals with neurological differences like ADHD and autism—is becoming part of the regular vocabulary. However, despite one in seven people currently falling into that bracket, they are still forced to work, learn, and live in environments that don’t cater to their diverse needs.


Human-conscious design is ingrained in Tarkett’s ethos, and we recognise the pivotal role we play as a flooring solutions provider in ensuring that today’s public spaces—from schools to offices—are inclusive and truly fit for purpose.


Building on the success of our evidence-based virtual reality dementia filter launched in 2018, further research has enabled us to take our design capabilities to the next level.


Now, in 2024, we’re proud to introduce the virtual reality Human Conscious Design Platform (HCDP), a revolutionary solution that allows neurotypical users to experience how physical spaces might look, sound, and feel from the perspective of someone who is neurodivergent.


The technology behind HCDP Backed by crucial insights from interviews with neurodivergent individuals, teachers, businesses, and intensive research into bodies like The National Autistic Society, The Design Council, and the World Health Organisation, we were able to programme the HCDP using the advanced gaming technology of ‘Unreal Engine 5’.


When users wear the virtual reality headset, they can experience various sensory stimuli in real-time that could potentially overwhelm, understimulate, or distress someone with processing differences. Light intensity is one significant area that the platform focuses on, revealing how illumination affects different objects in the environment throughout the day—a unique feature not previously seen in similar platforms. The innovative technology even makes it possible to dial in specific lumen values for each light— almost down to the bulb—mitigating potentially triggering scenarios for neurodiverse individuals.


Shifting paradigms with ‘human-


conscious design’ Changing the narrative on neurodiversity and moving away from a one-size-fits-all approach to design is a complex task. However, the launch of Tarkett’s VR

platform is a crucial piece of the puzzle in making this much-needed shift.


Following the principles of ‘human-conscious design’ means recognising that no two individuals are the same, even among those who are neurodiverse. It involves ensuring that everyone can reach their full potential by creating spaces that accommodate diverse learning needs and sensory differences.


HCDP is bridging the gap by allowing neurotypical facility managers, architects and designers to experience environments from the perspective of individuals who are either ‘hypo-sensitive’—those who thrive in highly stimulative environments—or ‘hyper-sensitive’—those who are easily overstimulated. This immersive experience is particularly relevant for understanding the needs of individuals with neurodivergences such as ADHD and autism.


To further support professionals in shaping the public spaces of the future, we are introducing our latest RIBA- accredited Continued Professional Development (CPD) course, Human Conscious Design Principles. This training provides valuable insights into the principles and best practices for designing with neurodiversity in mind, equipping professionals with the knowledge they need to create environments where every individual in our diverse society can thrive.


Complementing this initiative, we have also published our comprehensive Human Conscious Design Principles guide. This essential resource offers business leaders and designers a deeper understanding of neurodiversity, along with practical advice on creating more inclusive spaces.


Optimising spaces for diverse needs There are several factors that facility managers can take into consideration when collaborating with architects and designers to develop spaces that support both neurodiverse and neurotypical individuals. These are:


Space planning


Conscious space planning is crucial, especially in communal environments or social hubs that might be triggering for those with diverse sensory processing needs. To ensure a comfortable environment for everyone, spaces should be clearly defined based on their purpose, for example, eating, learning, or playing. Factors such as strategically placing furniture can help segment areas to bring a sense of structure and organisation.


In environments where sensory stimuli are difficult to control, there should also be private rooms for self-regulation. These spaces provide neurodivergent
