Meanwhile, MHA Hillside in Aylesbury is using virtual reality to allow residents to fulfill their dreams from the care home. Residents are donning headsets and taking virtual strolls through snowscapes and along exotic beaches without actually leaving the facility.


A company called PainChek is pioneering the use of artificial intelligence to assess the pain levels of residents who may not be able to articulate their distress. Claimed to be the world’s first intelligent pain assessment tool to employ the use of AI, PainChek works by analysing micro-expressions in residents’ faces.


Technology therefore has a highly valuable role to play in the care sector. It can improve residents’ quality of life, provide them with new experiences and connect them with their families. But during the current health crisis it has been particularly crucial in improving cleaning efficiencies and enhancing safety for both residents and staff.
