EDITOR’S NOTE Welcome to the 2016/2017 Tomorrow’s Cleaning Yearbook

It has been an exciting and eventful year for the cleaning industry, with plenty of change – some for the better, some for the worse. Either way, it’s certainly made for an interesting 12 months.

One of the major positives to come has been the decision from the British government to introduce a ‘National Living Wage’, replacing Minimum Wage this April. This new legislation will give cleaners on the front line a much needed pay-rise, and although it has been met with some scepticism from the Living Wage Foundation, it is no doubt a win for those currently struggling to get by on minimum wage.

Within the industry itself, it’s been all change too, with plenty of acquisitions and mergers to keep up to date with. One of the major deals in the UK occurred back in June of last year, when Northwood Paper Sales Ltd acquired Disposables UK. The move was described as being mutually beneficial, with the two companies complementing each other, and the acquisition therefore giving them a wider reach in the away-from-home market.

Elsewhere, in the summer we welcomed a new Chairman to the British Cleaning Council in the shape of Simon Hollingbery, succeeding Doug Cooke, who decided to step down after three years in the role. Speaking at the council’s AGM in July, Simon said: “I will strive to make sure the Council continues to be important and relevant to the industry it serves.”

This year, we also welcomed the return of the Cleaning and Support Services Association (CSSA), which made its triumphant return after a two-year hiatus at the turn of the year.

However, in sadder news, the industry was shocked by the announcement in February that the Building Futures Group had ceased trading. The news came as a surprise to many in the cleaning world and has left some with more questions than answers. It’ll definitely be worth keeping an eye on the story to see how it unfolds.

Anyway, we trust that you will find our comprehensive guide to the cleaning world useful, as inside this handy yearbook you’ll find all the necessary information from some of the key players across all sectors of the industry. From chemicals to carpet and upholstery care, sustainable cleaning to scrubber dryers, it’s all here in this definitive guide to the cleaning industry.

We hope this serves you well over the next 12 months – here’s to another exciting year!
