AND THE WINNER IS...


Over the past 30 years, the Loo of the Year Awards has established itself as one of the leading events in the UK cleaning industry calendar. Here, we hear from the Awards’ organisers, who tell us the benefits of getting involved.


The Loo of the Year Awards exists to encourage the highest standards in all ‘away-from-home’ or public toilets throughout the UK and Ireland. Everyone has a shared responsibility to make this happen – toilet providers, washroom suppliers, cleaning contractors, FM companies, staff, visitors and customers – all toilet users.


The Awards are owned and run independently and since their introduction in 1987, the annual Loo of the Year Awards competition has helped focus the spotlight on ‘away-from-home’ toilets. It is now considered as ‘the loo standard’, and is supported by the national tourism bodies of England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Jersey.


Any type of ‘away-from-home’ toilet can be nominated or entered into the competition, as toilets in all markets are covered – including retail, hospitality, leisure, heritage, entertainment, holiday parks, education, health, offices, car parks, public toilets, mobile toilets, transport and sport. There are 60 separate Awards categories listed on the entry form, and entries are accepted from anywhere in England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Isle of Man and the Channel Islands.


Every entry is fully assessed against established judging criteria, covering male and female facilities, as well as any baby changing, accessible and/or Changing Places facilities. All receive a Loo of the Year Awards grading certificate; Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum, following an unannounced visit by a fully trained and authorised Loo of the Year Awards Inspector. Certificates can be mounted in a frame and displayed with pride on entrants premises to confirm the

standard their toilets have achieved based on a UK recognised standard.


Mike Bone, Managing Director of the Loo of the Year Awards, said: “The improving economic situation and targeting of new entry prospects has resulted in an increase of 24% in new entrants for 2015. Entries were particularly strong in the retail, hospitality and holiday park market sectors, and the Awards enjoyed a 13% increase in public toilet entries, which bucks the national trend of the closure of public toilets by many local authorities.”


WHY ENTER? Entrants recognise the value of gaining an independent assessment of their provision, gaining prestige and recognition of their brand, and importantly their cleaning employee’s efforts, as a result of achieving a Loo of the Year Award. They can also use their grading to benchmark their toilet provision performance against competitors and can use the awards success as a real benefit when in negotiations with clients and prospects.


THE AWARDS EVENT A range of National and UK Awards will be presented at a daytime Presentation Event on Friday 2nd December 2016 at the elegant, four-star St Johns Hotel in Solihull. In addition to presentation of the Awards there will be a sparkling wine reception, four course lunch with wine, supplier exhibition, entertainment by a well know comedian and unrivalled networking opportunities. The event offers an excellent opportunity to provide hospitality to staff, customers and prospects.
