CLEANING CHEMICALS & DOSING EQUIPMENT

Environmentally friendly alternatives to synthetic cleaning chemicals

Alastair Scott, Sales Director at Robert Scott, explains how one organisation has reduced costs and boosted their sustainability efforts by moving away from conventional chemical cleaning products.

According to our latest ‘state of the industry’ research, 80% of cleaning professionals have made sustainability a priority. Many are seeking to reduce their reliance on harmful chemicals whilst still maintaining the highest cleaning standards.

This increasingly eco-friendly approach is now being embraced across a wide range of sectors including hospitality, healthcare, retail and manufacturing.

Eco-friendly effectiveness

As businesses become more aware of their ecological impact, there has been an increased focus on reducing synthetic chemicals, cutting down on plastic waste and decreasing carbon footprints. It’s no surprise that they’re seeking alternatives to traditional chemical-based cleaning solutions that still effectively target germs and bacteria.

This has led to Robert Scott innovating with electrochemical activation (ECA) technology – a cost- saving and environmentally-friendly disinfectant and alternative to synthetic chemicals.

The Toucan Eco system requires just two natural ingredients, water and salt, activated through electrolysis to create a multipurpose disinfectant cleaner virtually on tap. Inspired by the human immune system, it creates hypochlorous acid (HOCI), which naturally occurs in humans to fight disinfection, and a very low concentration of sodium hypochlorite (NaCIO). Toucan Eco, with a gentle pH of around 7.8 to 8.5, is certified to antiviral and antibacterial standards (EN 14476, EN 16777, EN 1276 and EN 13697) to kill up to 99.999% of germs.

As well as cleaning and disinfecting surfaces, Toucan Eco works as a deodoriser and can be sprayed into the air to land on surfaces and kill bacteria that creates odours, leaving behind a faint chlorine smell.

A key additional benefit of such systems is their ability to help businesses significantly reduce disposable plastic use. The Toucan Eco removes the need for over 80% of single- use plastic bottles, reducing plastic waste and carbon emissions linked to manufacturing and shipping traditional cleaning products.

Helping an award-winning sustainable business

One organisation already benefitting from eco-friendly cleaning systems is Alchemilla. The award-winning Nottingham restaurant sought to reduce the use of chemicals as part of a sustainable operation strategy. It installed the Toucan Eco Active system, which is ideal for small to medium-sized facilities. One single activation will produce 10L of disinfectant and cleaning solution, equivalent to around 16 600ml spray bottles.

The system is particularly well-suited for any busy environment where a quick, efficient cleaning process is essential, but especially those which prioritise sustainability or where harsh cleaning products aren’t suitable.

Alchemilla now uses Toucan Eco to clean all areas of front of house, including tabletops, glassware, windows and mirrors, fridges, furniture and restroom facilities, as well as benches and worktops in the kitchen.

Alchemilla Head Chef and Proprietor, Alex Bond, explained: “The staff have found the system easy to use and incredibly timesaving, which always helps at the end of a long shift. The results have exceeded our expectations and knowing we’re using considerably less chemical product and further reducing our plastic waste output is exactly what we set out to achieve.”

The restaurant has seen an average total saving of £200 per month on the cost of chemical cleaning agents, as well as a huge saving on the volume of plastic waste.

Looking ahead to a greener future

The shift towards environmentally friendly cleaning solutions is demonstrating how reducing reliance on harmful chemicals and single-use plastics is not only possible, but hugely beneficial for the planet and cost-effectiveness.

Toucan Eco enables organisations to maintain high hygiene standards while cutting down on plastic waste, lowering carbon emissions and minimising the health and environmental risks associated with traditional chemicals. As more industries follow suit, eco-friendly cleaning practices will play a vital role in shaping future sustainable business operations.
