FLOORCARE & MAINTENANCE
Top tips: Resilient floor cleaning and maintenance
Tony Peak, Sales Manager at Bona, a family- owned company that provides sustainable, high-performance flooring solutions, gives us some advice for cleaning and maintaining resilient flooring.
Resilient flooring is the most common surface to find underfoot across many
sectors. Look down when you’re in a shopping centre, hospital, sports hall or airport and most of
the time you’ll see a type of resilient flooring, be it vinyl, PVC, linoleum or rubber.
This type of surface is widespread for several reasons: its durability, cost-effectiveness and also because it’s easy to keep clean. However, even if a surface looks clean and sparkly, it doesn’t necessary mean that it’s hygienic: it could still be a hotbed of bacteria.
Here’s the best way to ensure that resilient flooring, whichever industry, is properly cared for to ensure it’s in top condition. Not only will these steps result in a cleaner, more hygienic surface, they will also extend the life of the floor.
Remember too that the right cleaning processes, together with the use of high quality, sustainable products, mean less downtime for a space and are key to a better, longer- lasting floor.
Efficient entrance systems
With as much as 80% of dirt entering a building brought in by foot traffic, it’s important to ensure a quality entrance flooring system, of the right size, is in place and cleaned regularly to remove dirt.
Dynamic deep cleaning
Heavy wear and tear on a surface results in a build-up of residue and can very soon lead to the arrival of stubborn dirt and stains, which create a dull appearance. A thorough deep clean will revive resilient flooring, restore freshness and bring the surface back to life. Use a powerful scrubbing machine such as the Bona PowerScrubber, designed to deliver higher performance than auto-scrubbers.
Regular cleaning
Regular cleaning is a key part of any cleaning and maintenance schedule. It’s also more effective and has greater benefits than occasional deep cleans. Loose dirt should be removed on a regular basis using a vacuum or a dusty mop. Bonded dirt requires a solution that effectively dissolves dirt, which could be undertaken manually with a mop and bucket or using a machine.
The optimal frequency for cleaning will vary depending on how the surface is used, and should be adjusted to reflect the level of traffic and wear the floor is subject to. Another point to consider is that lighter coloured floors may require

more frequent cleaning than darker floors.
Spot stains
As soon as a stain shows on a surface, remove it immediately. Use a dry paper towel, water, detergent and white spirit or alcohol – in that order – and the stain should disappear. There are some products which must never be used on resilient surfaces. High alkaline products such as ammonia or soda and strong solvents such as acetone are extremely harmful to flooring.
Remember also to always test the cleaning products on a small section of flooring that is in an inconspicuous area first.
Flooring protection
Think about the furniture and equipment that sits on the surface. To reduce scratching, for instance, use protective feet on chairs and tables and ensure that castor wheels are made of a soft material that’s suitable for resilient flooring.
Another recommendation is to add a protective layer on top of the original surface to improve hygiene. Bona Pure HD is a top coat that takes resilient surfaces to another level, reducing porosity to simplify routine cleaning and maintenance and enabling better hygiene and cleaning.
High quality cleaning products
The improper use or overuse of cleaning chemicals can cause damage, discolouration and even affect the performance of the surface, while abrasive cleaners should be completely avoided.
Select high quality, tried and tested cleaning products and equipment that do not harm the surface or the environment. Bona provides products that clean, deep clean and protect a surface which ensure efficient maintenance, lowering maintenance and cleaning costs.
