10 Questions with... Harriet O’Neill

Each month we ask a cleaning industry professional the Tomorrow’s Cleaning 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Harriet O’Neill, Product Manager at Arrow County Supplies.

1 2

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? I trained as a Physiotherapist and spent a couple

of rotational years in the NHS, before moving into the corporate world as an Event Manager in London.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE CLEANING INDUSTRY? As I am sure is true for many others, this was an indirect

path. My previous role was National – requiring UK and European travel – with a young family and husband and travelling too, the balance became difficult. It was important for me to find a locally-based corporate company who valued excellence and improvement highly. Arrow turned out to be the perfect partner – with their central office conveniently located close by.

3

WHICH THREE WORDS DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONALITY?

Tenacious, determined and sociable. 5

HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE CLEANING INDUSTRY?

In a market where we are striving to balance efficient with effective, we need to continue to grow product development and create pioneering solutions to problems.

6

IF AN INTERN WERE TO START TOMORROW, WHAT’S THE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD

GIVE THEM? Ask for more: you have a limited time to gain as much diverse experience as you can and set yourself ahead of your peers in a highly competitive job market – don’t waste it.

IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY TOMORROW, HOW WOULD YOU SPEND YOUR FORTUNE?

On flying pigs and a yacht to take me to Madagascar, as I hate flying.

IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER PARTY AND INVITE ANY THREE PEOPLE, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD

THEY BE AND WHY? Sandi Toksvig for her wit, Luciano Pavarotti for his voice and David Attenborough for the stories.

WHAT, DO YOU THINK, IS THE FUTURE OF THE CLEANING INDUSTRY?

As plastic in our oceans continues to be a highly emotive topic, sustainable and plastic-free product sourcing is an obvious market development opportunity. I think manufacturers will be increasingly encouraged to provide credible plastic-free alternatives.

James Metzger, Co-Founder of Metzger Search & Selection, asks:

IF YOU COULD VISIT ONE PLACE IN THE WORLD, WHERE WOULD YOU GO AND WHY?

Madagascar – nature and wildlife are two of the few things that “switch me off”, plus it has a rainforest, stunning beaches and nice hotels.

FROM WHICH OTHER INDUSTRIES CAN WE ATTRACT NEW TALENT TO THE UK CLEANING

INDUSTRY IN ORDER TO BRING FRESH PERSPECTIVES AND METHODS WITH THEM? The majority of my sales and marketing career has been in the Pharmaceutical industry, and I feel that the synergies between Medical and Cleaning businesses lend this opportunity. I have been surprised how many similarities there are and how skills are transferable in many aspects of sales, marketing and operations.
