REGULAR Change is in the air

Neil Spencer-Cook from The British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICSc) gives us an important update from the Institute.

Here at BICSc, we are preparing for several changes this year, starting with the news that Stan Atkins, BICSc Group CEO, will be stepping back from the Institute at the end of June 2023.

Stan has been the lead at the Institute for over 15 years, ensuring that we remained the ‘go to’ organisation for Membership, Standards and

Training. During this time, we have grown from five employees to 22.

BICSc Training and Services Ltd was established to fulfil the training requirement both in house and externally maintaining the consistency of the BICSc standards.

Stan has seen the implementation and regular review of CPSS, the assessor’s app, the BICSc training centre, the virtual training suite and at this year’s cleaning show the BICSc Cleaning and Hygiene Audit app. In addition to this, Stan spearheaded the initial growth of the international market where BICSc now has a strong and developing presence.

So, what does that mean for the future? Well, I’m honoured to say that earlier in the year I was offered and accepted the role of Group MD, so I will take on the role of leading BICSc from 3 July 2023. All I can say is that I will pick up the baton from Stan and continue to move forward with BICSc, ensuring that we remain valid in the industry and offer our members good value and useful information.

“This should be a seamless transfer and these changes

will not impact on the services we offer.”

We will continue growing the offering of skills training for cleaning operatives and supervisors, and other soft services specific courses and workshops. Whilst there is a bigger

requirement from the industry for online training, we will also ensure that the face-to-face option is available for those that prefer a more personal approach.

In addition to this, BICSc Chairman Lorraine Davis comes to the end of her tenure as Chair in September 2023. Lorraine has seen us through four years of difficult times (a year longer than normal due to the pandemic), and she has been instrumental in how the business survived lockdowns and came out the other side with a positive attitude and more developed offering to our customer base.

I am delighted to announce that Soo Bartholomew of Birkin Group has been nominated by the Council to replace Lorraine in September. Soo has been a long-time promoter of the benefits of BICSc, and we are looking forward to Soo’s input into the future of BICSc and building a close working relationship.

With the individual member representative’s council elections this year as well, there are more potential changes coming. Please remember that if you are eligible to stand for Council to get your nomination submitted.

Please note that as members and customers, this should be a seamless transfer and these changes will not impact on the services we offer. Stan, Denise Hanson and I have been the senior team here for the last five years, and with Denise and I still in position, the consistency of BICSc will continue. Indeed, we hope to offer more Industry focused services and look forward to the new Council members offering guidance and strategic direction.

The Council and the team members here at BICSc would like to thank both Stan and Lorraine for everything they have done for the institute during their time in post, and wish them all the best for the future.
