WHY AUTOMATE


RESTROOM CLEANING? If you were to film a cleaning worker cleaning a restroom using traditional cleaning methods, you would see just how slow and cumbersome the process is. What you would likely witness would be the following:


• The worker manually spraying counters and fixtures one by one.


• Manually wiping those same areas one by one.


• Going back and forth to the janitorial cart for supplies.


• Bending down or getting down on hands and knees to scrub clean each toilet.


• Sweeping floors.


• Filling a bucket with cleaning solution, getting a mop, and mopping the floors.


ISSA, the worldwide cleaning association, estimates that the amount of time it takes to manually clean a restroom can be determined by how many fixtures it has. At approximately three minutes per fixture, a cleaning worker cleaning a washroom with three toilets, three urinals, and three sinks, would take about 30 minutes to clean the washroom, possibly more.


Automating the process can reduce this time from 30 minutes to about 10 minutes. Instead of three minutes per fixture, ISSA estimates cleaning times with a no-touch system are reduced to about one minute per fixture.


This means that in the time it takes to clean one washroom manually, three washrooms can be cleaned if the process is automated.


Further, automating restroom cleaning typically produces ‘repeatable outcomes.’ This means if performed correctly, the same high-quality cleaning effectiveness is repeated each and every time.


We are not sure now what steps school administrators are going to take to adjust to reduced operating budgets. However, if it means reducing the number of cleaning workers, at least we know there are options. Having a plan and automating the process are the best options to take.
