collecting essential data only, and are using it responsibly. Individual manufacturers are also recognising the risks and addressing them accordingly.

For example, an increasing number of companies are encrypting the data generated by their connected systems and providing security patches to counteract emerging vulnerabilities. Robot manufacturer Adlatus is one such company, announcing at Interclean 2022 that its latest floor cleaning machine would pixelate the images taken by its 3D camera to provide an extra level of security for customers.

In the meantime, there are many forms of toilet and cleaning technology out there that are providing positive outcomes without compromising privacy. For example, automatic taps and flush systems in toilets can help to save water while also preventing cross-contamination for washroom visitors. Connected dispensers provide data that’s invaluable to the cleaner – but of no use to potential criminals.

Tork Vision Cleaning is a case in point. This uses sensors and people counters to anonymously monitor washroom usage and check on dispenser refill levels. It enables cleaners to check remotely via a smartphone or tablet which washroom is likely to require servicing and when a dispenser needs to be topped up. Cleaners are then prevented from having to make multiple journeys to the facility to carry out random checks, saving time and boosting productivity.

There’s no doubt that technology in the toilet has the potential to intrude when it monitors our actions in the most private of spaces. Yet if it is used to streamline processes, simplify washroom use, control consumption and improve cleaning efficiencies, it can become a force for good, providing tangible benefits to businesses and washroom visitors alike.
