WASHROOM HYGIENE

The future of hygiene papers must be sustainable

With a carbon footprint 70% smaller than that of virgin fibre toilet and kitchen rolls, Alasdair Sharp, UK & Ireland Head of Sales AFH at Satino by WEPA, discusses how corrugated cardboard is proving a suitable solution for the next generation of paper.

As we draw ever closer to 2030, the need for businesses to make positive strides towards national net zero targets becomes ever greater. Yet, this comes at a time when 93% of CEOs say they are guiding their business through 10 or more simultaneous challenges.

As such, there are concerns decision makers are having to sideline sustainability as rising costs and challenges take precedence. This, in part, is a response to a belief that in the face of a looming recession, sustainability will be too costly a commitment – but it doesn’t have to be.

Sustainable focus

It's estimated that 42m tonnes of toilet paper are used globally each year, with every one in nine rolls bought made from recycled fibres. Papers made from virgin fibres remain the most widely purchased but tipping the balance of the ratio between virgin and sustainable alternatives can offer huge environmental benefits.

For facility and hygiene management professionals, it also represents an effective way to shrink their business’ carbon footprint whilst delivering a trendsetting example to competitors.

The corrugated cardboard innovation

The rise of ecommerce has resulted in a surge in cardboard production. The UK’s cardboard packaging industry is now valued at £5bn, having grown by 10.6% in 2021 alone. At Satino by WEPA, we’ve invested in pioneering research that’s opened the door to corrugated cardboard as a resource for recycled hygiene papers, an innovation draped in environmental benefits.

Its PureSoft range, the result of its breakthrough research, is made from 100% recycled corrugated cardboard and includes toilet tissue, kitchen rolls and hand towels, in standard and ‘jumbo’ sizes as well as a centrefeed roll. All papers are 2-ply, except for the 3-ply kitchen rolls.

The carbon footprint of this new production method is 70% smaller than that of production methods which utilise virgin fibres. By using less energy and water, as well as omitting the bleaching process from production, we can ensure that PureSoft is not only soft and hygienic, but better for the environment and competitively priced too. Satino by WEPA believes that sustainable choices shouldn’t come at a premium. PureSoft delivers on that belief, dramatically improving its circular economy in the process.

A natural flourish

Initial feedback has been positive. An IPSOS Consumer Study PIU 2021 saw 84% of respondents rate the product ‘very soft’. However, more importantly, 78% of those surveyed reacted positively to its natural colouring.

Bright white hygiene papers may be the norm for many, but the introduction of bleach-free papers feels like a key step forward for sustainability. By omitting bleach from production processes, up to 80kg of chlorine can be saved per tonne of pulp produced. With non-bleached paper delivering the same standard of quality and softness, business hygiene managers can purchase these products without worry.

For staff, clients and customers, quality hygiene standards are a positive reflection of a business. With a growing expectation for businesses to act more sustainably, Satino by WEPA’s new PureSoft is a very clear way for businesses to showcase their commitment to both.
