Making your Award entry a winner
Michelle Marshall, Editor of ECJ and Founder of the European Cleaning & Hygiene Awards, shares her top tips on how to create an award-winning entry that captures the attention of the judging panel.
Just before Christmas, PR guru and sponsor, Ceris Burns, took over our column to share the value that entering our awards have. From raising your profile to positioning you head and shoulders above competitors, an award shortlist or win is PR gold.
How exactly do you get to that finalist position, though? How do you grab the attention of our judges and bag yourself a place on our shortlist? It all comes down to your award entry.
Crafting a potentially award-winning entry can be a daunting process, but you shouldn’t let that stand in your way of sharing your achievements and celebrating innovation. Don’t be put off by the word count or categories. When it comes to putting pen to paper, here are a few handy hints to help you make the most of the opportunity to impress our judges:
• What do you want to be known for? Start by thinking about your achievements from 2022 and narrow down what you think your top success was. Let this be your focus and find a category that best suits it.
• Take us on a journey When you’ve identified your focus, start framing your story. We want to know what your achievement is, whether that be a new product or service, or a significant client relationship or internal initiative. Tell us why you launched that product or set up that process. Tell us how it impacts your colleagues and your customers. Take us on the journey with you.
• Lasting impact We want to know just how successful you have been, so don’t be shy about sharing your results. Give us all the data and stats you can throw at us. Remember: if some of the details are sensitive or confidential, we will always keep them that way.
• Make you entry count The most important thing is giving real thought to your

entry and plenty of time to draft it. Remember that the judges can only make decisions based on what they’re reading, so don’t assume they know anything else about your company or the particular project you are talking about.
• Back it up Bring your entry to life with evidence and case studies, there’s plenty of scope to do that in the supporting evidence section. You may make claims about the solution/technology/training programme you've implemented, but how do the judges know your claims are true? Show the judges what you have achieved by giving them concrete statistics, evidence or testimonials.
The logistics
The entry form is on our website and is simple to complete. You need to tell us why you think you’re award-winning, and give us a 500-word summary of your achievement. We also accept six pages of supporting info so get those case studies and stats in order.
We have 10 categories to choose from and you can enter as many as you like – just remember that only one entry can be submitted for a maximum of two categories. If you want to go for a few more categories, we’ll need a fresh entry.
The entry deadline is 22 March and then it’s in the hands of our judges. The shortlist will be unveiled in summer, ahead of the official awards ceremony in October, which will take place at The Round Room at The Mansion House in Dublin.
So, if you have success to share, shout it from the rooftops. We want to hear all about it. After all, being a finalist brings so many benefits, from giving you international recognition in the Cleaning and Hygiene sector, to improving staff culture, morale and confidence.
