Is magnetic flooring the solution we’ve all been waiting for? Ian Spreadborough, co-founder and director at IOBAC, lifts the lid on this game-changing technology and the benefits it offers.
MAGNETIC ATTRACTION
Whether we're enjoying a spa break, dining out with friends or visiting a museum, we expect attractive, interesting venues and unique experiences.
Good interior design is crucial to creating these experiences and flooring plays a critical role in this. Get it right and you can protect your bottom line with fast installation, minimal downtime and decreased lifetime costs. Get it wrong and you're looking at days of disruption for customers, costly repair and maintenance bills, and a lack of flexibility, making it hard to update your flooring.
THE POWER OF
MAGNETIC FLOORING It was the desire to solve these all-too- common flooring issues that led to the creation of a modern-day, sophisticated magnetic flooring system. Harnessing cutting-edge technology, this flooring system removes the need for adhesives. As a company, IOBAC recognised that a range of magnetic flooring solutions were required for different built environments, ranging from a metallised resin base for high traffic areas, to a dry-lay option for comfort and acoustic properties, to a simple tab solution for fixing standard non-magnetic tiles to a magnetically receptive base, whether that’s a metal raised access floor or a metallic base from the IOBAC Magnetic Flooring system.
Magnetic flooring can be installed direct to concrete, terrazzo, ceramic, plywood and vinyl, provided the surface in question is sound. This reduces costs by eliminating the need to rip up the existing floor – a potentially expensive, time-consuming process. And if there’s a damp floor, there's no problem. The metallised resin base works on damp subfloors up to 95% relative humidity.
FAST TO INSTALL Magnetic flooring is fast finding favour with a wide range of brands across the world, from leading supermarkets to hotel chains – and it's easy to see why. Firstly, it's very fast to install. In fact, it can reduce installation time by up to three times. This means less downtime, disruption and upheaval for customers,

guests and residents, as well as significantly reduced project costs.
SUPER FLEXIBLE Once magnetic flooring is in place, it's also very easy to repair or replace. Damaged tiles can be swapped out in seconds and an entirely new-look flooring system can be installed within a matter of hours rather than days, without having to call in specialist external contractors. The metallised base stays in place and you simply lift up the surface tiles and replace them with new ones.
A COST-EFFECTIVE AND
SUSTAINABLE CHOICE The cost savings of magnetic flooring continue throughout its lifetime too, thus bolstering the bottom line even more. Magnetic degradation, for instance, is very slow, with an estimated loss of 1% of magnetism every 10 years. And because magnetic flooring is removable, it is considered eligible for capital allowances under tax rules, further improving profitability.
And finally, magnetic flooring also makes sound sustainable sense, with contamination-free tiles being able to be reused, helping to avoid landfill.
THE DESIGN FREEDOM
YOU NEED Looking at the needs of flooring in the commercial industry, speed of installation and cost-effectiveness are likely to prove big attractions. But the most powerful benefit for this sector could turn out to be the design freedom that magnetic flooring offers.
The ease and speed of replacing the surface tiles means you can quickly remodel, change and enhance your environment, customising individual rooms and transforming the aesthetics and feel of your building.
Combine this with the other business benefits that magnetic flooring offers and you're looking at a solution that can help transform your business – from the ground up!
