A wave of silence spread across the planet during lockdown, reconnecting us all with the calming sounds of nature as man-made noise reportedly fell by 50%. Newspapers reported that birdsong seemed louder than ever and even the skies appeared bluer. Many suggested that this reconnection with nature provided the best antidote to our fears during these strange and troubling times.

physical desire for a quieter, less stressful living and working environment intensifies. The Acoustics Academy is seeking to sustain the wellbeing benefits of a quieter environment by supporting improved acoustics in the built environment.

Quiet Mark launched its online Acoustics Academy platform with a TED-style master-class event following the Surface Awards at the Business Design Centre in mid-February, coinciding with the 60th anniversary of the Noise Abatement Society charitable foundation from which the international Quiet Mark certification for low-noise technology and solutions is related.

Acoustics Academy is a free-to-use online platform, designed to further equip and empower architects and the building sector with a guide to expertly verify leading acoustic solutions for every building application area. Examples of approved products and specialist brands already on the platform include: flooring (Interface, Karndean Designflooring, NOX Corp.), glazing (Pella), sound barriers (Echo Barrier), acoustic panels (Saint-Gobain Ecophon, AllSfär), pumps (Salamander) central heating Boilers (Vaillant), acoustic doors (Enfield Speciality Doors), insulation (Rockwool), commercial ventilation (Rytons, Airflow, Vent-Axia), acoustic plasters and surfaces (Armourcoat, BASWA acoustic).
