EDITOR’S VOICE

Hello and welcome to the March issue of Tomorrow’s Contract Floors.

As I write this, the government has just announced a four-step roadmap to ease lockdown restrictions across England and provide a route back to a more normal way of life. This time, the prime minister is clear that the decision on making these changes will be made will be based on data not dates.

Each step is to be assessed against four tests before coming into force, starting with the return of schools on 8 March. From 29 March, just in time for the schools to break up for Easter, we will be allowed to meet up outdoors in groups of six or two households and this will include in private gardens.

It looks like we will be doing all of our socialising outside until at least 17 May and with no possibility of pubs and restaurants opening until after the Easter break, the focus will be on sprucing up our outdoor spaces and making them as hospitable as possible.

In fact, the trend for extending our living spaces into our gardens has been growing year on year and has surged during the pandemic. So, it seems only fitting then that in this issue we feature the latest outdoor tile trends as well as exterior flooring installation advice to help you achieve the best results on every job.

It is hoped that, all going well with the vaccine rollout and virus transmission rates, there will be a complete lift on all social distancing restrictions by the end of June. However, it’s not clear exactly when office staff can expect to return to their workplaces.

As workers left the office last March, hastily creating working spaces in their kitchens and spare bedrooms, many believed it would only be for a few short weeks. In the following months, companies found that their businesses ran just as smoothly remotely and working from home enhanced employees’ work/life balance. Almost 12 months on and many people report that they miss the social interaction aspects of collaborative working. So, what will this all mean for the future of the workplace? On page 22, we hear from architect Joan Renaud on what’s in store for the post-Covid office environment.

Thanks for reading and stay safe.
