DO YOUR BIT

Going green has never been easier. F. Ball talk us through how their sustainability initiatives can help flooring contractors to be more environmentally friendly.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – words often heard in reference to environmentally-friendly practices, though they are more commonly associated with day-to-day living in the home, than flooring installations. However, as climate change continues to dominate the political agenda and the prominence of green living trends build, clients are becoming increasingly environmentally savvy.

In the same way every conscientious homeowner ‘does their bit’ for the environment through recycling in the home, it is just as important for contractors to employ similar habits. Even small actions taken in every-day work can bear great positive influence on environmental outcomes, as well as work in favour of client expectations.

To enable the industry to achieve more sustainable ways of working, F. Ball and Co. Ltd. has introduced a number of green initiatives, giving contractors the opportunity to reduce the impact of their own carbon footprint, with minimal effect on the bottom line.

GREEN BOTTLES One of the first major initiatives is the replacement of its traditional five-litre yellow bottles, used for gauging liquids, tackifiers and primers, with 100% recyclable versions that are themselves made using an amount of recycled plastic, considerably reducing the amount of virgin plastic entering the waste stream each year.

The change was designed to reduce plastic waste and considerable effort was essential to guarantee the quality of the product inside. Similar to the rigorous testing its products undergo to ensure they work in specific conditions, F. Ball applied the same assessments to the new bottle versions in order to confirm products housed inside could deliver the exacting high standards they are trusted for.

Conveniently for contractors, the new versions can be recycled via normal waste disposal chain for recycling and can be recycled up to ten times.

ECO-FRIENDLY POUCHES More recently, a change of packaging material for F. Ball’s Stopgap 400 Repair and Stopgap 500 Micro levelling compound products provides another environmentally-friendly option for the industry. Launched last year, the eco pouches require significantly less plastic to produce than previous packaging and are also fully recyclable.

The switch means that there will be less plastic to join the 8m tonnes of plastic waste which is estimated to amass in the ocean every year. Further, the durable and waterproof design means the pouches are lighter, easier to handle, and offer extended product shelf-life in comparison to packaging of their predecessors, providing better value to the user.

RECOFLOOR RECYCLING In addition to the introduction of sustainable packaging, F. Ball has partnered with recycling provider Recofloor, the vinyl take-back scheme pioneered by Altro and Polyflor, in a bid to provide contractors with a solution for the disposal of flooring installation products, making it just as easy as dropping plastics in kerbside bins outside of the home.

A first for the industry, the initial trial allowed for contractors to deposit empty F. Ball five-litre bottles, and five and 15 litre yellow buckets at selected distributors, meaning the majority of the plastic packaging in the manufacturer’s product range could be recycled at no cost to the contractor.

In its commitment to excellence, F. Ball continues to explore ways to minimise its manufacturing carbon footprint, as well as provide contractors with easily accessible options to ‘go green’, for example, more replacement options for its product range.
